Thankfully its not quite as gloomy as yesterday, which made for a rather drab raw feel overall. The clouds have cleared somewhat in the last hour or two, and chinks of blue sky have tried to surface, but alas its turning into a very cloudy miserable January weekend on the whole, very uninspiring- and I'm expecting a fast descent into dusk in about an hours time.

Fingers crossed we will be looking at some crisp white scenes come next weekend, timing couldn't be better in my book, snow on Thursday/Friday towards the end of the week in time for the weekend, and generally when there is a bit more positivity about things especially in mid January traditionally a depressing time of the year. We had snow on Sat 16 Jan last year, the only snowfall of Dec-Feb period, it quickly thawed the next day, but we managed a decent cover overnight that held through the morning, allowing children and adults to play in it and make snowmen.

usually I think when there is a weather warning MEN exaggerates to get views, however they are quoting a met office forecaster here. Sounds exciting

Obviously the snow depth maps have to be taken with a pinch of salt but at least they are starting to show more substantial amounts across the region rather than just a slight covering and if this comes off as shown I'd imagine there will be some happy members in the northwest forum.

Best part is, i dont even think its exaggerating the depths on that chart, i expect there'll be more than 10cm in places.

Just getting into the mood by watching Yellowstone on the television.

now that is snow, even though they are supposedly in a period of milder winters.

Just checked myself following your post, crikey! Surely not for our neck of the woods? The shelves will be cleared from all the supermarkets despite bizarrely Northwich having a huge number of them!

Think I'm too close to the coast too see any lying snow but would be nice too see some falling snow though, either way I'm excited with the potential of convective weather for a couple of days and strong winds. Could be some blizzards in the region especially if the UKMO comes off which has a tighter isobar gradient and lower thicknesses to boot! Seems too good to be true.

Classic northwesterly Cheshire gap streamer looking at their figures.

Manchester is shown as also getting a dumping but the amounts drop off as you head east, and north east across the region with the Pennines looking to provide the eastern boundary.

for my neck of the woods we need more of a westerly element, we got a foot of snow from such a set up in early 2015.

good luck to those in the firing line and let's hope for once our region gets a good spell of winter conditions even if it's short lived.

Better waiting until Diane Oxberry comes on board or at least until the Daily Express says we are in for a record breaking January heatwave next weekend.

Right here we go.

It's looking brilliant, and instead of being in December as all the NWelys  that I can remember have been, it's in January so the sea will be that bit colder. I don't think we can tell what degree of marginality if any will exist on the coast until the event, but we have evaporative cooling playing in our favour, especially with the DPs being well below freezing.
