This is really promising to hear. According to the WRF that should be impossible for you to cee  any sort of wintry precipitation at the moment as the freezing level is 2100 m  and most of the air above you is between 3-7° above freezing and saturated.

The cold air must be undercutting already or something very odd is going on.

I posted about an hour ago about it snowing at the Winking Man in Upper Hulme which is several miles from Buxton around 400m+ asl I suspect reports will come in from Buxton of snow soon.

Yep it definitely seems like the undercut is coming in quicker than expected otherwise snowflakes are managing to survive for 2000 m above freezing lol.

Would expect 18 Z WRF and similar High-Res models to upgrade things a bit.

Had a feeling it would especially in the peaks

BTW I can’t see anything to get excited about over Saturday at least for here anyway. By the time precipitation arrives during Friday night there is already a strong inversion above the surface even though surface temperatures are near freezing. Don’t see how it could be anything but ice pellets and rain.

I just thought actually if the cloud base is low then the precip only has to go from there to the ground? so it might not matter about an inversion higher than the cloud base. Not very certain about that and how that physics works.

Nothing of note really here yet @ 408m though it is trying. Just a slushy layer.

Tomorrow is looking like a promising shot at some evaporative cooling could produce 1-3cm above 100m in the East of the region with the Central & East Pennines favoured for 5-15cm also the West Pennines above 300-350m.

The central & western areas of the region are likely to see some enhanced sleet / wet snow around midday tomorrow producing a dusting (less than 2cm) in a few lucky areas below 100m.

2cm contour > Oldham > Macclesfield

5cm contour > Saddleworth > Buxton

Some coverings possible west of this > Fohen effect unfortunately present.

18z WRF an upgrade again. Freezing level now down to 180 m at my location and DP at 0 so would be snow between about 13:00 – 15:00. Everyone East of M6  should be very happy.

Currently 6C at Manchester airport.

But 3.1C here just shows that being further east and closer to the colder air is helping. Hope this bodes well for tomorrow.

Very heavy rain over Lake District at present, but have spotted a couple of pink pixels over eastern high ground, won't be long before we start to see some green on high ground at least. Hoping wake up to green at least preferably pink everywhere..

Still rain here...heavier stuff gathering out to the west.  Might have to suffer a lot of wet before the final denouement turns a little wintry.

Still coming down here, just a shame it’s wet rather than white but the forecast looks good for a few hours of snow although it’s a nowcasting sort of day.

Yes, same here, moderate rain, 4°.  A bit of a wind blowing this a.m.  currently under a thick band of blue echoes.  Altitude for my postcode 150m asl.  Hoping for something a little more wintry later.

Plenty of reports of snow falling in the Yorkshire thread down to quite low levels so the mixing out of the milder uppers must be happening.

hopefully it will be heading this way shortly and our region can join in.

anyway off to work now so let’s see what the day brings.

Sweet spot looks NE of Appleby. METO got this one right. Radar definite battleground frontal convergence W and E. Big totals. We have 30% chance ❄️ at 16:00.

Manchester Aiport TAF or the last one seemed to have upped wintry prospects.

Same for Liverpool Airport which was showing no wintry prospects for today during yesterday's forecasts.

Increasing reports of rain turning to snow in Yorkshire, so don't think it will be too much longer to wait for Eastern parts of the region.
