Have you ever gone into the heat haters thread?

Even a 2 day period of 25c gives them nightmares.

Its all relative, its way above the likes of 1954

No way can this summer can be compared to the stinkers of yesteryear

Oh come on!

It doesn’t need to be a 1954, or 1986. The truth is, it’s still on the side of poor for many people. Not much sunshine and not a lot of dry days.

Careful... Vitamin D is a euphemism in some circles. 🙃

I now know I'm old. I had to google it to find out what on earth it could be.

Yeah I did know that, but thanks again for reminding me.

I think Never Screamer outlined just how the summer will be remembered. Coming outside your house everyday to see grey cloudy skies for days on end. Who’s going to even pay attention to stats, when it’s just so miserable and lacking in anything summery.

The summer index for London came out as 304, or very slightly above the average. That must be due to June doing all the heavy lifting regarding temperature and sunshine, because July and August were both worse than normal.

Summer 1996, which was a fairly typical British summer, had a summer index of 302, yet most would say it was far superior to this year.

1996 had a good June with a decent severe thunderstorm. This came after the cold spring.

July was so so, and I remember August being mixed.

Why do you think I use an index? You're making my point for using an index.  June prevents this summer from being put in the same box with 2012, 1956, 1954 etc because June was far superior than any of those Junes. You can't ignore that June.

It's the enthusiastic embracing of feelings and perceptions at the expense of non-compliant data in a scientific field I suppose.

I swear some just get so defensive and upset if you mention that it isn't amongst the worst summers.

Oh I’m not sure, I read a while back that it’s best to take vitamins and minerals  before sleep, not sure if that’s true  but I think the best kind is the outside from the sun.

I think it’s more for darker months to maybe take vit D, it’s not like we are living in Svalbard, we should get enough sunshine here in England, think it stores in our body?

Yes I believe it stores in the body but I guess it depends on how good of a summer it's been too. I don't take a multivitamin these days but got to admit I find when I did do at night it took me forever to fall asleep. Some people might not have that problem though.

Eating a banana is good for sleep though, it has muscle relaxants magnesium and potassium and vitamin B6 in it which can help produce serotonin and then the sleepy melatonin. I often eat one about an hour before bed if I had a bad night previously, seems to work well. 🙂

If I may...... but as someone who has lived through all the summers during the period 1961-1990 I thought I would post this summer's anomalies versus the Met Office records for that period.

Sunshine duration anomalies for each of the 3 months compared with that period. Not bad at all for the eastern half of the country; either average or above average sunshine amounts:

And next the mean temperature anomalies. Not bad at all. Average or above average for the whole of the country for each of the summer months.

Seems to me that the Met Office habit of continually moving the goalpost so that current seasons are compared with more recent years (which we all know are being impacted by global warming) is maybe raising expectations for weather that never used to be the norm? Just a personal opinion. 🙂

& for completeness, if I may,   here are the mean minimum temperature anomalies

& lets add the mean max temperature anomalies too

How it feels counts a lot more than ‘stats’.

Summer was crap. There I said it. Close thread.

Glad someone speaks from the same hymn sheet.

Summer was crap for people who enjoy proper summer weather and long clear sunny spells.

I just elaborated a bit more, because we both know this summer was wonderful for those who hate sunshine and some nice summer warmth.
