Certainly looks like an interesting week of weather, even if I don't personally agree with it warranting a name. Given a couple of weeks ago, much of October threatened a benign period of nothingness in the models, I'll take it happily.

Kind of looks a little subtropical to me if anything rather than your usual mid latitude extra-tropical depression. Quite a warm airmass surrounding Babet. A lot of moisture content with it so could amplify rainfall across western Europe in the coming days.

It also made me laugh that the BBC weather article on this storm had to include a bit on how to pronounce the name. It's not exactly a ringing endorsement of the system if you're having to do that. I get that we're sharing the system with other countries who have their own names, but if there's doubt that the general population aren't even going to be able to pronounce the name then that has to raise doubts over this system.

Heavy rain focus on NE Scotland with this storm, with over 100mm, perhaps 150mm, over the three days. This area suffered badly last week, with bad flooding in the Strathmore valley.

Did the weather system that caused flooding in Scotland recently have a name, and will this one be worse?

No name, last one was Agnes and that was just West coast/ Ireland wind.

Looking really like this set up  is obviously going to cause  severe rainfall totals as its our wettest period of the year. The orograpic impact will be immense..What a developing situation..

No as it wasn't a storm, and I don't know yet, will be prolonged.

and to think, this time in 1987 we were clearing up after 'the great storm of 1987' wonder what name it would have been given back then? 'storm michael'? 😄

That’s the problem, warning are issued on such a regular basis nowadays, the novelty has worn off and the vast majority of people just ignore them.

They should do a precautionary warning system and an now warning system

The storm naming system I feel needs some revision. For a start most of the named storms often only seem to deliver what many people would describe as a bog standard autumn or winter blow.

I feel there should be a stronger tie in as to whether a storm is genuinely likely  to cause structural damage to well maintained structures or blow high sided vehicles over or bring down healthy trees.  So many warnings that I have experienced the results of have just ended up being very windy days that might blow your bins down the road or bring down twigs or branches but not trees.

In other words a perfectly normal autumn or winter blow and nothing out of the ordinary for the season.

This can as other have said lead to a situation where people think its 'just another' warning.
