Fluffy snow here our distance from the sea definitely helps at times.

Darlo is currently getting a more organised area of snow pushing in from the west

Temp has gone up to 1.2 now which is why. Shame as like you say if it was dark it would have delivered more.

Ice will now be the issue.

Forecasts I've seen today show a band of showers working down through the night but clear after midnight

I think Windermere has been in a good spot again today if any of that precipitation has been snow

I can confirm light rain here in south tyneside.

I see the next potential chase is on, this time for the beast which is far more exciting in my opinion than a northerly.

I don't think that matters in a westerly flow. (for North East parts nearer the coast)  Its your elevation.

Problem with this blast is its not been a direct Northery.  More of a NNW'ly.

Problem with an easterly is the airmass needs to be very cold to get snow on the areas 10 miles or less from the coast (unless you have elevation).

IMO the very best direction for snow showers is a direct northerly OR even better NE'ly where you get streamers forming (2010).  The airmass does not need to be as cold to get snow right along the coast.   Only issue would be if you are well inland!!!

We often struggle with a northerly, sitting in that indent between Northumberland and Whitby / Scarborough they come straight down and miss us.

If its a NE it is game on.

Yes I confirm nearly 4 inches, but it started raining by 12.30pm sadly.. but there is a still a good cover on some surfaces, all very slushy. The mild sector had it been smaller would have allowed more to stick for longer. Tomorrow will be very very icy!

Pouring with rain just now. Is that it then? I'm underwhelmed.

This whole cold spell ( promised so much a week ago ) has been quite underwhelming in terms of snow.

I do like a hard frost and we have had them and lovely cold mornings, another very hard frost tonight and possibly a couple of snow showers next few days but that will be it I guess.

Met office still touting the easterly in Feb but once again suggesting a dry easterly.

We are in the warm sector.  Colder air is already in S.Scotland heading south.

Watch the radar as the transition in forecast to bring a band of precipitation down with 100% chance of being snow by midnight (according to gfs!)

Then before Friday, FAX chart showing chance of a couple of features which could bring some snow....

NE'ly is best.  The last easterly "beast from the east" was only good for snowfall well inland...  Feb 1991 was the last time I saw a real potent beast.  Shower after shower.  White out conditions and over a foot of snow to the coast by morning.

What was the wind direction in Feb 18, I recall that really cold spell as I started a new job in Durham and had to travel 40 mile through blizzards, only to get there to be told the local lad I was meeting couldn't get in for the snow.

Sure that was an easterly and I remember the ice days, boiler condensers freezing and ice covering the windows.

But do agree NE is best for us too.
