Is alright there's only a few cart horses and sheep up north so there won't be much of an impact.

Local forecast for today has us peaking at 31 mph for today and we are hitting 40mph normally they are pretty spot on so the predicted 51 mph peak tomorrow is going to be interesting too see what we do actually get.

If this storm was going to hit to saf I'm sure there would be an Amber and the met office all over it. Typical bias as usual

50 - 55mph winds aren't worth an amber warning anywhere in the UK in my opinion and those are the speeds being forecast for most areas. Some disruption is likely but those speeds are unlikely to cause significant or widespread damage.

That's true enough, but unless your going along the m62, or is there anymore that go east west across the country in the north, with the wind direction, cross winds will not be in the usual places for sure. It'll be blowing down the M1, A1 M6.

That's what the yellow warning is for. Amber should be 65mph + and red 80mph +.

Surely a warning has to be relevent to the area affected more so than dictated by a fixed MPH wind speed? Topography as an example must come into the equation?

I did say the cross winds won't be in normal areas, lorries could well be caught out.

I remember well Storm Kyrill Jan 18 2007 , possible Sting Jet, the West to WNW flow was up around 85kts NW England , carnage on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct
The flow tomorrow looks to be WNW at its peak around day break / rush hour, the further northeast you go the stronger the wind flow , and will be veering more NW'ly as the morning passes , slowly easing off

Yes, UK warnings are impact-based, not quantitative (Met Eireann's are). The complaint about the current wind warning is the Low Impacts bit when already there are ferry and widespread railway impacts being highlighted for tomorrow across Scotland.

Is this based on how the UK system is designed, to raise awareness (for those whom choose to take note?) But to avoid sensationalism by the MSM and therfore induce uncessary panic? I.E treading a fine line/balance?

Don't really see anything more than normal winter fayre..met office have issued yellow warnings and enough has been covered by the media. If any one doesn't know there's a bit of wind inbound they must be daft. My 87 yr old parent s who I am currently visiting in Essex have mentioned it even though they are far from the warning areas

We’ve hit 44mph here and our station is in a sheltered spot… I see local stations up at 77mph in the last 10 mins, pretty wild.  The house is shaking.

77 mph recorded here bloody interesting taking the measurements at the stevenson screen this morning blown all over the place.

Should be red alert if we are getting these speeds

House is shaking kids shouldn’t be travelling to school in these conditions very poor from the met office because it’s up North!

That sounds very scary , I hope you will be OK.

Even down here the win d has been howling all night and in the last 15 mins really picking up, no where near 77 mph but around 45- 50 as things are moving around.

Thank goodness trees aren't in leaf now . Well they  are aren't down this way .

"Strong winds across a large swathe of the country Thursday, causing some travel disruption. - Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected - Some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer - Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges - Some short term loss of power and other services - Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves"

Seems pretty accurate to me.
