  1. Snow showers on and off here in North Notts, quite a pleasant surprise when out walking the dog. Some good size flakes too.
  2. Really dislike marginal situations as from experience we (IMBY) always end up on the wrong side and just get loads of cold rain...
  3. Indeed, and I bet they never have to endure the models showing cold at day '10' without it ever verifying. No too jealous!!!
  4. Yep, you know things are dire when there are less than 100 members browsing the Mod thread in the heart of winter! I love it when these forums are rocking but the past few years have been really trying. Nothing ever verifying and all proper Awinter eye candy always beyond 10 days. It is exhausting, just imagine what it would be like if we entered a mini ice age again, this place would be buzzing most winters
  5. I am wondering with Easter being quite early this year, whether we'll get a cold and snowy one. It wouldn't surprise me if it was...
  6. It was 15c driving home from West Yorkshire earlier today. Truly extraordinary for the time of year. Start of worrying trend, I really its hope not, but you have to wonder!
  7. While we get ready for another bout of wind and rain, the good old U S of A looks set to get clobbered again http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-35374741 Do they ever have Winters like ours which as well all know have been utter durge for the past few years?
  8. Countryfile weather report has it warming up by the weekend, back into double digit figures with wind and rain! Pretty disappointed by this past few days of cold weather and although we had snow, about 4cm I can't help but feel under whelmed by it all. It hasn't really been that cold and we had more snow last Boxing Day (2014) What is so frustrating is that we've had nothing but rain for weeks on end and then the moment we get some cold weather it all but disappears, then the mild weather comes back and the precipitation along with it. Really hoping Feb and early March can deliver some true winter weather
  9. I bet the old Door Mice and Hedgehogs don't know whether they are coming or going! So much for hibernation hey! It is a pretty bleak start to the Winter (from a coldie perspective) but at least things can only get better, least I hope so for the sanity of many of us in here! I'm thinking (and hoping) if we are to get a descent cold spell that this will come second half of Winter now. So, I'll nail my colours to the mast and go so far as to say we'll have a 1947 style Feb i.e. bitterly cold and snowy with this extending into the first 2 weeks of March
  10. I'll take that on the 16th as it would be a very welcome birthday present!
  11. I don't know where the radio presenters these days get their information (presumably the Daily Express ) as this morning they were banging on about the forthcoming Winter being the worst in a century! Why is it that we have one mornings frost and all of sudden we are in for the most severe Winter Won't they ever learn...
  12. The following would be the dream (for me)... November: gradual trend to cooler / freezing weather with chilly evenings and early morning ground frosts December: frosts become more severe and with daytime and night minima dropping. The first falls of snow occur around the 15th, just prior to my Birthday , with regular and frequent top ups all the way to Christmas (including on the day itself) and then on into the New Year. January: snowfields look great and depths increasing as compacted snow and ice builds up. Record breaking low temperature is achieved along with one of the most ferocious blizzards the UK has ever seen, leaving another further 3 feet of fresh snow. Drifts start to reach 12ft + in places February: continuation of January theme with some lovely clear, sunny but exceptionally cold days. Daytime minima record is achieved. Further heavy snowfalls and blizzard like conditions giving us near record breaking snow and drift depths March: first couple of weeks cold wintry weather continues before gradual thaw takes hold, giving way to more spring like weather. April: winter has one last bite and provides record breaking snowfall and cold for Easter Undoubtedly, I may have relocate to Canada to see the likes of this, but one can dream and If it only happened once in my lifetime, I would be very happy with that!
  13. There is talk (BBC Countryfile weather report) of the first taste of winter weather (for some) come the end of the week and yet there is nobody on here! Where is everyone? Can't believe how quiet it is...
  14. Came across this following another link that Bullseye posted in another thread Thought it might be of interest to many on here. I don't know how reliable the study and information is, but it will be fascinating to see if they are onto something.
  15. Agreed, I didn't see him mention anything about last winter (in Europe / UK) being harsh or cold or snowy. Although I may have just not seen it. I seem to recall him being fairly accurate with the winter of 09/10 and have tried to keep abreast of what he forecasts since. Madden'esque he is not and I for one hope is onto to something.
  16. Some wonderful stats John, especially being from Nottingham (born and bred) so thanks for posting. Sadly I wasn't even a twinkle in my folks eyes so can only imagine what an amazing winter it must of been. My mum takes great delight in telling me how they used to have try and de-ice the inside of the house Windows and that she would carry a boiled egg to school to keep her hands warm. She said their school never closed either!
  17. Couldn't agree more with you feb91blizzard and was going to reply to Thunderbolt_ in a similar vein. We had one dusting last winter, on Boxing day, it froze and hung about for around a week and that was pretty much it. It was better than nothing, but... I remember fondly the winters in the mid 80's and as a kid creating a skid path on the ice with my mates in the playground which hung around for weeks. There is a lot of hyperbole about this winter (more so than usual ) which sells papers and gets everyone excited but rarely if ever comes to fruition. I think this winter will have notable cold spells but these maybe of the drier and severe frost variety, which I can live with. Here in the East Mids it has been very dry for months, the rains seemingly dying off before they get to this region. Only time will tell though! As a coldie I would love nothing more than to experience an exceptionally cold and snowy winter
  18. I guess we have been spoilt with the likes of December 2010, March 2013 etc. so once you have tasted a really decent spell of winter weather, you crave for more! I think we did have snow last winter on one occasion, which hung around for about a week, but it was nothing to rave about and I was laid up in bed with man flu so couldn't enjoy it anyway. If we can't have a month or more of cold, snowy proper winter weather then I would take a right royal one off dumping. Where about 2-3ft of snow falls over night and you can't move anywhere the next day. I just want to see my 2 year Golden Retriever diving about in it, but so far (in his young life) we haven't had anything good enough for him do so...
  19. Glad this is back and was wondering when the thread was going to go live As always, hoping for 3 months of cold and snow but one can only dream of that scenario! Personally, I think it might be quite a dry winter with plenty of hard frosts, but anything has to be better the last couple which have been a bit of let down. Fingers crossed for a good'en.
  20. Aha, made me laugh that, nice to see plenty of bee love about Bees are truly remarkable and the fact they can fly at all is somewhat of a miracle
  21. Just my nature (pardon the pun!) I don't believe in killing anything. I am forever having to rescue insects out of our conservatory and remove house spiders (the missus don't like spiders). The other week a dragon fly got into our conservatory and once I managed to get it, it just clung to my finger like it was a branch or a leaf. It was amazing seeing one up so close, truly an odd and yet beautiful looking creature
