  1. So sorry to hear that, my thoughts are with you. I have rewritten this bit several times as I don't want to make a sad situation worse, but I hope my experience may help you in some way. My Mum died several years ago now and at the time I pretty much lost interest in everything including the weather. But everyday it does get a bit easier. Everyone deals with grief in there own way so whatever you are feeling is perfectly normal. You may get people trying to encourage you to go out and do this that and the other, not really possible at the moment in any case, but I would say only do things when you feel ready. My main bit of advice would be to find one person you are comfortable talking to and tell them how you are feeling and be honest. Also, in hind sight I should have kept going with a hobby, such as the weather, as a bit of a distraction. So hang in there things will improve slowly.
  2. Just about managed an ice day. It toyed with me for a while being stuck at exactly 0 for 3 hours but finally started dropping again and now down to -0.5. Happy New Year everyone. May it be filled with snow?️
  3. Seems to be what the latest, slightly updated, met office outlook is suggesting. So could mean getting an overnight snowfall and probably melting a bit in the day, with temps still suppressed. A few places might get lucky.
  4. Mean just touching -7 on the 4th then back up to about -5 after that. Could really do with that dipping a bit further to increase snow chances next week. Still time.
  5. Temp has only risen to -1.4 after a low of -1.5. it's gone a bit misty. I wonder if large parts of the region could see an ice day to close out 2020?
  6. Still time for that to change. Could get slightly colder uppers or warmer ones or might not even be an easterly at all by the time we get there.
  7. Doesn't look like it's been updated at all. Looks identical to yesterday's.
  8. I remember before the BFTE in 2018 their temperature forecasts where 5 to 6 degrees and they kept going on about it being dry. They only changed their tune the day before and even then they still had the temps 2 to 3 degrees above freezing instead of sub-zero. So, hopefully, they are being similarly inaccurate now.
  9. Finally after 3 days of gloom I have sunshine! Got down to -1 last night with a nice frost. Still just below freezing now.
  10. Temps going in the wrong direction here. Just reached the highest temp since Sunday at 2.9c.
  11. Warning is still there for tomorrow and Thursday. The northern extent has been moved south so just getting to Suffolk now. Text remains the same so 2 to 5 cms with 15 possible mainly over 200 meters. Still a lot of variance in the models for this but we still have a chance so let's wait and see.
  12. Temperature 1.6 after a low of -1.1, can't see it getting to the forecast high of 4. Dew point 2. Pressure is as low as I can remember seeing it, on my not particularly accurate barometer, at 982 and it's sunny. Good to see snow warnings for our region Wednesday into Thursday. Up to 15cms over some of the high ground but 2 to 5cms more likely.
  13. Yeah, I imagine that is the initial warning for the areas that may see disruption first. The risk then extends south east , as you say, so would expect more warnings to follow. This still 2 days away.
  14. Latest met office east of England forecast for Sunday to Tuesday going for showers or longer spells of rain. No mention of snow at all.
  15. Temperature has been falling since midday yesterday when it was 12.2, now down to 3. Mostly sunny and windy.
  16. Will be interesting to see if their outlook changes in the next few days or the models start coming around to their way of thinking
  17. Someone on the model thread earlier mentioned that they thought this winter might pan out like 1978/79 or 1984/85. I remember 1984/85 very well with 2 particularly severe spells with ice days and plenty of snow, one in Jan and one in Feb. Now I don't remember 1978/79 so well as I was 9 (it wasn't until the 81/82 winter that I became a real weather geek and started keeping daily records, which sadly got lost when I left home) but I do have memories of lots of snow and freezing temperatures around that time and I was always under the impression the 78/79 was the more severe winter, but looking at this there isn't a massive difference. Epping Weather Site daily records for year 1979 WWW.SWANSTONWEATHER.CO.UK Epping Weather Site daily records for year 1985 WWW.SWANSTONWEATHER.CO.UK These are daily records from a site about 15 miles away from where I was living at the time. The Januaries from these 2 years are almost identical but February is slightly more severe in 1979 with lower mean temps but there is a longer sub-zero spell in Feb 1985. The winter of 1978/79 always seems to get the headlines but down in the south seemed to be on a par with 1984/85. I guess it was more severe further north but looked like more of a freeze/thaw cycle down here. Anyone have a good memory of the 1978/79 winter?
  18. I remember a similar situation in the mid 90's. Boxing day 95 or 96 I think. It was fairly cold over Christmas and I remember a few well scattered wintery showers being forecast for the evening overnight period. I was living in Hemel Hempsted in Herts and working in Brentwood, Essex at the time. Driving to work via the M25 on the morning of the 27th December there was some areas of snow that I went through but it wasn't that extensive. As I neared the Brentwood turn off there was a bit more in the way of snow, a few inches. The road climbs steadily from the M25 junction to the town itself which is about 100m asl. When I got to the town I couldn't belive how much snow there was - a good 8 inches. It was pretty crazy. Apparently one of the well scattered snow showers had become particularly slow moving over the town and dumped loads of snow. I guess the slight elevation helped.
  19. I've found that the ones on the met office site have been about 2c above reality for the last few weeks for my location.
  20. I think because at the moment it's still a little bit too far away to be certain of anything and things do have a habit of changing so they won't say anything much until things are a lot clearer. The main risk of anything particularly wintery appears to be towards New Year which is miles away in meterolgical terms. At this stage it doesn't look like being amazingly cold but could be cold enough for snow to cause problems on low ground in some places - which is mentioned in the met office longer range updates. It could well be a forecasting nightmare with snow events cropping up at short notice.
  21. I was visiting my Dad in North East London at the time. The snow came through in the early afternoon and dropped 3 inches there. The band was then supposed to pivot and stall in that area before pulling away. Back home in North Essex we weren't forecast snow as it was suppoded to stall to the South. I remember watching Ipswich playing at home on the TV that evening and it started snowing heavily there. The band had in fact gone further north than predicted and stalled over North Essex and South Suffolk. When I got home a few days later there was clearly a lot more snow there than in North East London, at least 6 inches I would say.
  22. Very true. I find it incredibly frustrating because we can get exceptional winter weather in this country it's just very irregular. I have great memories of some truely special events such as the blizzard in early Jan 1982 and the exceptional cold and snow from Jan 1987. Every year I hope for something similar so, whilst I do like sunny frosty weather, it would be nice to get something a little more exciting.
  23. Record snowfall in parts of Japan Record snowfall in Japan - BBC Weather WWW.BBC.CO.UK Heavy snow has been falling across Japan and several snowfall records have been broken including Fujiwara which saw 176cm of snow in 48 hours. Massive snowstorm in the NE states US snowstorm: Tens of millions on East Coast to be affected WWW.BBC.CO.UK Warnings are in place in 14 states, with up to two feet of snow forecast in Pennsylvania and New York. and what have we got to look forward to? A couple of cool days over Christmas and maybe a frost if we are lucky. Wahoo! Can't wait.
  24. Jan 85 had a 12 day very cold spell with tempertaures sub-zero for much of that time. Also a decent 10 to 15cm snowfall - where I was in Essex anyway.
