  1. Morning beautiful Midlanders. Well well well, it sure is a fine line for snow tonight, literally! IMO Birmingham will do well from this, especially higher ground around Birmingham. 5cm looks very possible. I would also expect Leicester to do ok, 1-3cm possible and also Northants. Wawrickshire should also be on the right side of the snow line but lower ground may be more touch and go. I'm not too optimistic down here in Oxford, we may be just too far West for snow. It might be more of a sleety mix but it is so close, it could go either way. I'm hoping for a shift of 30 mile West in the 850's on the 12z run. That would be good news for me personally! Haha. This chart illustrates just how close it is. Matter of 20-30 miles could make all the difference!
  2. Will, bit off-topic, but are you aware of a Scrooge show taking place in Glossop over the next few days? My Uncle is starring in it alongside his friend They did their first show tonight and I think they are doing another one tomorrow night. It's at Partington Players Theatre I think. As for the Weather at the moment, not got much to say apart from zzzzzz
  3. Is it just me or does it feel colder than the 4-5c that is currently the temp over parts of the Midlands? Down here in Oxford, it is currently 5c according to my nearest weather station but it feels more like 0c!
  4. Didn't realize it would be that cold tonight! It certainly does feel cold in some parts of my house though.
  5. Well, this cold snap was absolute tosh down here in Oxford Woke up to go to the toilet at 5am yesterday morning, it was rain\sleet at best. Then this evening, coming home from work, it feels bitterly cold and it starts to rain!! I checked xcweather on my phone as I felt sure it would be cold enough for snow but the temp was 3c with a dew of 1.5c at the time. So this cold snap was a case of close but not close enough down here.
  6. Ferlippin' heck! Seen that band of rain/sleet/snow heading Southwards from Newcastle way? That is the main event we are all hoping will deliver some snow later but boy that looks potent! Hope it maintains it's intensity as it heads South
  7. This will probably be Glossop at 6am tomorrow morning
  8. I don't mean to be a party pooper but i've just had a look at the 18z run and my heart has sunk The reason for the snow at the moment in some parts seems to be down to the colder 850's that are over the Midlands at the moment. Once those milder 850's head in later on in the night when the main batch of PPN moves down, it looks like rain/sleet for many in the Midlands
  9. WHAAAT?! 2-3 bed houses? The house prices in Oxford/Oxfordshire are scandalous to be honest. For 500 a month you'd be lucky to get a small room in a house share That blob over the Peak District looks very promising for the Midlands in a few hours. Temps are now cold enough for snow! I have to go bed soon though, working a 12 hour day tomorrow, not happy
  10. I said it last Winter and i'll say it again now... What are the house prices like in Glossop?! *froths at the mouth*
  11. Midlands Ice Age reported snow flakes. Maybe it was very localized snow flakes
  12. Maybe I was over exaggerating a bit The mods aren't that harsh on here. They do try to keep things on topic I guess. No harm in going off-topic a bit though They tend to be more lenient in the regional threads. Great to see Solihull getting it's first snow of the Winter! Bodes well for later on I think, I think places around Birmingham that have elevation above 100m will see some settling snow out of this. For the likes of me down in Oxford at 90m ASL though, definitely squeaky bum time
  13. Wow! they look like a snow lovers dream
  14. Really sorry to hear that LeeKay, horrible thing to have to go through. Bish, my Nan has Dementia, had to care for her for 9 months back in 2011, hardest 9 months of my life! So I know how heartbreaking it is to see a family member go through that. Anyway, back on topic before the mods whip my backside I'm really not too optimistic about tonight now, local Weather reckons rain and sleet at low levels and snow over high ground. Looks far too borderline to even deliver settling snow here IMO. Hope i'm wrong though!
  15. Boy do I not like the size of that mild sector on the 12z *GULP*
  16. BOOOOOOM Good to see Bish back too! I think we should organize a NetWeather get together at some point, i'd come up from Oxford for that, seriously! There does seem to be quite a few people from Solihull on this forum though, maybe that's where the snow lovers gather
  17. Looks like a very patchy affair though!
  18. The GFS is one cruel...*enter expletive here* It has completely taken away the snow risk for Saturday night into Sunday! It does however still show some possible snow for tomorrow night into Saturday. Height could be a big advantage.
  19. Haha Gotta love a security light for snow spotting! Well, having looked at todays 06z run, the snow chance has indeed shifted more towards the Central part of the Midlands! I did think that things would shift a bit when I saw the models last night. Now, the main chance of snow for Derbyshire, Nottingham, Leicester, Northants, Birmingham and Oxford (I know, it's not technically the Midlands but I'm being biased ) looks to be on Saturday night into Sunday I know these charts suggest a more sleety mix for Birmingham but a lot of places around Birmingham have some elevation, if you live at 150m+ I would say you would be ok. Things can still change in 48 hours though!
  20. I wouldn't worry too much about that right now. The models are still to nail down what will happen at the weekend. They have been consistent with their forecast of a cold snap but they are changing run by run with regards to PPN placement and troughs and showers. The 18z GFS run tonight shows a feature that could bring a few cm's to some areas of the West Midlands on Saturday night Also, there appears to be something to keep an eye on if you live in the East Midlands. A disturbance running along the Eastern side on Friday night. If either of those features moves by 50 miles either way, it could be a direct hit for the Midlands! Obviously the chances of anything more than a few CM's are looking slim but it could leave a few people with a nice surprise if it changes slightly over the next few days.
  21. You try not to get OCD on Weather sites at the first hint of snow? Well, you've got no chance in overcoming that problem fizzychops I've been coming onto Netweather for the past 11 Winters now, I thought that maybe I'd stop doing it at some point but I doubt I ever will As soon as the models start to show colder Weather, I can't stop myself from coming on here. It's like a drug I might spend more time in this thread this Winter. Last Winter I flirted between this thread and the South West/South Central thread but barring the odd few from Oxfordshire, most of the posters in there are from the South West or the far South. I'm nearer to the Midlands really!
  22. Yeah, that definitely looks interesting! The classic thing that always seems to happen in a cold snap like this is, usually the models won't show much in the way of PPN 3-4 days in advance but as we get within 1-2 days away, troughs and showers seem to show up more widely and things get a bit more exciting. That has certainly been the case so far as we head towards the weekend. A few days ago, it looked bone dry for Central areas but now PPN is being forecast to head inland more. Hope the trend continues
  23. Daaamn, that was a pretty potent system for Oxfordshire! Luckily I survived the cycle ride home from work at 8pm but the train journey from Didcot to Oxford wasn't plain sailing! Fallen tree on the line held us up for half an hour
  24. Well, glad to say that I made it home safely! Those winds were vicious though! Cycling home was tricky and the train from Didcot to Oxford was an eventful ride. Were stopped at a red signal for 30 mins due to a fallen tree on the line! Was certainly a potent system. A case of blink and you'll miss it though, the high winds only lasted around 6 hours here.
  25. I thought that was the case, I was clutching at straws and hoping you would say that the worst of the winds might have passed through by then.
