  1. But there will be 40 metres of snow in Dorset! Or, at least, there'd better be...
  2. Well, I bet the QMC will be its usual 30 degree furnace, something I'm not going to relish when doing my individual investigation in there... I've still got the window open in my bedroom to make sure the sun doesn't heat it up too much during the day! Heating? What heating?
  3. Hello anyone who is reading this or has just stumbled upon it by accident! Just got back from staying with a friend in Grimsby, during which time we visited various places. Here goes: Grimsby and Cleethorpes Cleethorpes Boating Lake: Meridian Point, Cleethorpes. Grimsby Dock Tower - taken from the road on a pretty grotty day as I was driving (I didn't take it!), so doesn't do it justice. The Humber Bridge From the A15, Lincolnshire (excuse my dirty windscreen): Arriving on the Yorkshire side when driving: Then walking across a couple of days later... Massive cable supports The Humber Estuary, looking west. Along the bridge towards Lincolnshire: Coming ashore on the Lincolnshire side: And from the Humber Bridge Country Park in Yorkshire: York From the Shambles: York Minster: A merchant hall in York: Lincoln Going up the originally named Steep Hill: ...Which leads to Lincoln Cathedral: Then back down Steep Hill: Hull Quite a few nice buildings and such other things here... William Wilberforce, slavery abolitionist: One of Hull's famous white Telephone Boxes: That's about it really! I know the pics aren't fantastic, but I suppose that couldn't be helped, what with conditions and my camera...
  4. Looks like you, like myself, would benefit from a really nice camera - you've got some ace shots there! Get ready to "wish you were here" to the photos I'm about to put up...
  5. You've just reminded me of the dismal walks home along Derby Road in winter...yuk. I do know what you're up against, the main roads just clog tremendously! It's been a lovely August down here! I guess the rain today is welcome in a sense...just so long as it doesn't hang about!
  6. Hello! Just putting up some pics of some of the views from the higher hills in Dorset. It's a shame, because things are much more impressive on the way up. Also, I must really get pics from West Dorset - the views off the A35 and A37 roads are to die for. But until now, views from the Beacon, looking over Somerset: Then from the highest point in Dorset - Bulbarrow Hill: A key to what you can see is here: These pictures really don't do the places justice. The road going up Bulbarrow was incredibly steep!
  7. :o I'm shocked...hold on, just let me get my jaw back off the floor...does this mean there is actually activity in the Atlantic Basin now?
  8. Well, one things for sure. I believe wet summers correlate with good cider apple yields! So even in this dour summer of rain and recession, the cider farms/orchards will have apples coming out of their ears. Or so I think... Oh, I think potatoes do well in the rain as well. Yay! Jacket potatoes all round. Yes, that it has. It's probably been the wettest I can remember it being round here. Granted that's only 12 and a half years mind, but still... You've got to feel for the tourists though (or not, because they still clog up the roads). I was walking near to Bournemouth Pier/Lower Gardens and heard a family (with distinctly Estuary English) saying to a evidently grumpy kid: "You shouldn't behave like this, you should be grateful, it's not often you get the opportunity to come here" - I just laughed to myself and ploughed on through the rain. Also, I managed to ruin a pair of shoes walking along the cliff halfway from Bournemouth to Boscombe. Thanks summer of 2009!
  9. EIID, by any chance? Yes, I've been keeping an eye on this. I'd rather not be wading through mud (as it appears I might have to from what I've seen for the days up to Thursday) in a field in the Cranborne Chase, but it seems that it's going to be comfortable for that weekend. Good job too rather. Seems the tents I saw them putting up just outside of Sixpenny Handley today for the festival may be useful later on though, time for that to change.
  10. No bias due to your location then?! I'd love that to come through...but Bournemouth does suffer a couple of degrees cheers to being on the coast. Maybe Dorchester?
  11. That is fantastic! I tell you, you could do that for EPac as well and still have the same thing! Maybe the basins are suffering just like the banks, lack of investment. *Groans*
  12. I think your signature of named systems kinda sums it up! Surprised you lot didn't chase every tropical wave!
  13. Tropical activity? What is this? I thought they'd made that illegal recently...
  14. I'm going to take exception that that, I played a cricket match in the Midlands this Saturday and I'll tell you now, that ball swung. Granted, I bowled badly, but it swung for me!
  15. Oh yes...nothing like a bright orange pint of Cheddar Valley!
  16. I'm just gutted I didn't call it "gorgeous." *Groan* Either way, you oughta see it for yourself. Hell, even I do, I've only driven through it!
  17. Looks a bit flat Yetski... B) Decent pics - I'm looking to do a cheese related adventure to Cheddar and the Cheddar Gorge this summer (for the pics rather than cheese!) because it's so beautiful there! Oh, and some of those pics just reminded me of the views off the A37 just north of Dorchester...I miss that part of the world...
  18. Sounds about right. I was assuming, given its location, that low SSTs would hamper this, but wasn't banking on the low shear...but like you said, not much legs once out of the Gulf Stream...
  19. I'd echo that exactly - how are the SSTs (or so I thought) warm enough to sustain TD development? Maybe just naivity, but what are the conditions, such as SSTs and shear, that have aided the formation in this case?
  20. Ello ello ello, what do we have here? Well, judging by the NHC Special Tropical Weather Outlook, it's in an unfavourable location conditions wise, and even if it did intensify, it's too close to land and will "landfall" before acquiring TD status. Well, that's about the Layman's of it all, I should probs have a look at the imagery and the nitty gritty of the system (at least it's got a warm core this time), but I've just got in from the pub after a long day so CBA. I don't reckon we'll get a fully fledged tropical system for quite a while yet, that's mainly a hunch, but I'm not sure Atlantic temps are warm enough for one thing (without having looked at them, I probs oughta). Still, we'll see.
  21. I think it's one of the main reasons I don't have as much interest in systems in other basins is because of the different scales. If they were all in line (and I could be bothered to use the JTWC) then I might...but all the boundaries are different as a result of the different measurements...aaaargh! Yep, I'd be happier if everyone came on board with the Americans...for once! Oooh, if I'm picky, surely that could be more symmetrical?
  22. I'm with you, I've only ever thought of the SS scale to be wind. There are many other factors that surely contribute to storm surge that you'll never come up with a successful scale that includes both wind speeds and surge into one. The only way to do that would be a parallel surge scale, which would just get confusing. It's not a whole revamp of the scale though, not the big deal they make it out to be. SS, what would your opinion be if the Americans came into line with the rest of the world and used 10 min wind averages? Would this be easier for comparison? Especially in the case of say Hurricane Ioke (I think), which travelled into the West Pacific and was then measured with the 10 min avg rather than the 1 min avg.
  23. 1, What month will Ana form? June 2, Name of the first hurricane? Bill 3, Name of first cat 3 hurricane? Grace 4, Name of first cat 5 hurricane N/A 5, How many landfalls the U.S will have? 4 6,How many Major Hurricanes will form? 3 7, Name of strongest hurricane? Larry
  24. You have not been to Dorset, nor Ben Nevis! Surely you can't make that statement?
