  3. 4inShareThe US National Weather Service's Global Forecast System keeps track of the world's weather. It's an incredibly valuable repository of information, but its data, shown in DayGlo charts peppered with numbers, isn't the easiest to visualize without a degree in meteorology. That's where the Earth Wind Map can come in handy. It takes the the Global Forecast System's data — updated every three hours — and applies it to a zoomable map. The result is a beautiful representation of the world's wind in almost real-time. Earth Wind Map is interactive. Click and drag the globe and you'll spin it in place, then wait a few seconds before the data appears in the form of snaking lines. Gentle breezes are thin strands of green, strong winds are long streaks of bright yellow, while the strongest currents are an angry red. Take a trip around Earth Wind Map's globe now and you'll be able to compare the light summer winds currently wafting across northern Brazil with the swirling gusts off the north-east coast of Japan, a hypnotic and colorful reminder of our planet's wildly changing weather. This supercomputer-powered site, called simply "earth," takes global weather mapping to a whole new level. Software developer Cameron Beccario built this visualization of global weather patterns, which updates ever 3 hours. You can turn the animated globe, and you can zoom in on particular locations. You can also see the earth from different heights, and use different overlay options (such as temperature and sea level pressure) to make the globe that much more beautiful. The map relies on data compiled by NOAA's Global Forecast System to update its global wind patterns every three hours, and OSCAR Earth and Space Research to update its ocean surface current patterns every five days. Details are thin on the ground on the sparsely-designed website, created by software engineer Mr Beccario, but it describes itself as a 'visualisation of global weather conditions forecast by supercomputers'. It follows an interactive global wind map, also created by Mr Beccario. Studied together, they reveal just how unpredictable our planet’s weather system can be. Ocean currents transport huge amounts of heat around the world, making them one of the most important driving forces of climate. Perhaps the most striking example is the Gulf Stream, which makes northwest Europe milder than other regions at the same latitude. The currents are generated from the forces acting upon the water like the Earth's rotation, the wind, the temperature and salinity differences and the gravitation of the moon. Hope that helps

  16. Bad night here, have slept only about 4 hours, pretty big leek in my kitchen from the rain last night which blew my electrics in one part of my house (and still no idea where it is coming from and now have water gathering behind the wallpaper too) Will a lot more rain forecast things will only just get worse for many people The sea is roaring this morning with high tide due later, i shall not even be going to have a look As for the island like rustynailer said it now looks very different around the coastal area, Yaverland has had some huge cliff fails past couple of months, Shanklin also, when the weather has improved i shall do a photo blog of the islands damage and post it on the Forum, but here are some pictures of storm damage in my house and of the island (sorry for links with the islands one). Lots of damage but i still smile everyday when i get up as it can be repaired and forgotten about... https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/t1/1625511_792248584122834_1068503330_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/t1/1800431_792250687455957_177509532_n.jpg http://www.islandecho.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/lakecliffgardensclifffall2.jpg http://www.islandecho.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/lakecliffgardensclifffall.jpg Morning stats 976.0mb (falling 1.5mb/hr) Max gust 38.6mph (last hour) Temp 8.2c Soil moisture 17.0cb Dew point 4.7c Humidity 80% The rain radar does not look promising, some pretty heavy rain expected. http://estofex.org/ http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ Stay safe guys

  19. Errr... i need to be worried, i live right on the seafront in a very old house, time to batten hatches, get under my bed with cookies and coffee and ride this one out.(AGAIN!!) .house is already damaged from flooding Looking at these models it not going to be nice.. Stay safe guys and please do NOT venture near seafronts to watch high tides..lives are worth more then a few pictures..
  20. Really not looking good for west/south at all and like said with high tides this is most certainly going to add too the already super saturated grounds/river levels and sea defences Time to burrow my head and hide away and hope the IOW stays firmly situated 6 miles from the mainland
