Moderate amount of rain - yes.

Something out of the ordinary - No.

Unless its still developing (which looks unlikely) not much more to come either

Looking good for southern areas later on today as the rain band pushes north. Estofex have a level 1 out.

Main thundery activity staying over France this morning with mainly moderate bursts of rain over the UK.

We've collected around 8mm overnight and are now dry, if overcast.

9.4mm so far here in Cheltenham; looking bleak outside with dark clouds and moderate rain. Occasional distant rumbles of thunder.

Doesn't look like it's quite playing ball does it. I think the idea of four inches of rain in places will be over the top by quite a margin. Lets see how it develops though.

EDIT: not so much forecast because of the rain that's just fallen  Sorry, I'm tired this morning! For us they say 20-30mm more rain falling widely, with potential for 40-70mm.

my take for what its worth

looking around at the data available at about 0700BST today, Friday, and it seems about the same as was being predicted yesterday. perhaps just a touch down on rainfall totals but still enough to cause worries for those under the areas of heaviest rainfall and near to the main rivers to be affected.

Still the Severn and Trent catchment areas seem the most likely to be worst affected.

With embedded convective rainfall in the dynamic type then localised surface water is something that will occur for short spells in localised areas.

Obviously the main risk is for low lying areas as mentioned above through the weekend and especially up to the early hours of Saturday.

Even the Met Office are downplaying it a bit now, perhaps now they're more sure of the situation. For us they say 20-30mm falling widely, with potential for 40-70mm. Still a lot of rain!

Just checked the warning page for us and although it's probably out of date it still very high amounts of rain possible.

There may not have been over you, but there were thunderstorms over South Kent, Hampshire and along the coast of Sussex in the early hours, some storms have been rumbling NW over Hants, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berks and Oxon over the last few hours too. T-storms are always hit and miss and last night I said they would be isolated.

Upper trough seen on the airmass imagery above pivoting across Sern England and Wales looks like sharpening through the morning into the afternoon, so downpours in the current rain band edging slowly North and NW may intensify across Southern areas this morning and central areas this afternoon.

As skies clear across Southern Counties to the South of the rain band this afternoon (roughly South of M4) warm moist air present is likely to become unstable to surface heating, with upper low and cold pool present, so heavy showers with thunder may develop over this area if the sun appears, these are likely to be slow moving with hail possible - with a dry air intrusion spreading across Sern areas.

Several flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder between 1.30 and 1.50 this morning, seemed to be centred somewhere to the south east of me. A spell of moderate-heavy rain to go with it but I haven't been out to take the readings yet so don't know how much there was; I'll be surprised if it's more than 6mm.

Incredible torrential bursts have just started in Eastbourne - looks like some new developments on the back edge of the rain band. Its been raining almost non-stop here for nearly 10 hours...
