That's what i thought. Depends if the water temps off the coast of Nicaragua and Honduras are as warm as the rest of Caribbean, and also if being this close to land has had an effect on it's intensity.

An unconfirmed report that Felix is once again a Category 5. It is listed as such on Hurricane Felix's article on Wikipedia, but i'm suspicious as i can't seem to find an NHC advisory confirming it.

Also, i can never be sure with wikipedia, as someone seems to constantly edit the current storm information and set it back about 12 hours.

Page is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Felix_%282007%29.

Wow 2 cat 5 landfalls one after the other!

That has to be some kind of record!

Yep first time ever that two Cat 5s have hit land in one season.

Looks bad for the Miskito indians who live along this low lying coastal area. ;);)

wow, but not surprsing relaly as it did look extremely good on IR images, even now its a little inland it still has a cracking cat-4 type structure with some really intense convection around the eyewall, not quite as severe as Dean at its peak but i can only imagine we'll see some serious flooding from this system.

Indeed at landfall 160mph is probably a touch conservative, I'd guess seeing its sturcture Felix was closer to 165-170mph at landfall. The reason this was able to ramp up so fast from 135mph was simply because it was such a small compact system, the same way it ramped up fast then weakened nearly as fast, it was always possible for Felix to restrengthen rapidly again under relaly impressive upper atmopsheric condtions.

Felix should rapidly weaken inland as it goes over a mountainous region and with such a small system the system will weaken quite rapidly inland whilst at the same time dropping a lot of rainfall and having amazing wind power, at least for the first 3-6hrs into the track overland.

So yet ANOTHER historic hurricane in the 07 season and another landfalling cat-5, you don't get any in 15 years then two come along in less then a month!

Wouldn't like to be in the core where it made landfall.

That's a record that won't be broken for a long time I think (and certainly hope!)... not 2 landfalling cat 5's in a single season, but 2 landfalling cat 5's within a month of each other... (now, I may be wrong, but wren't Dean and felix actually within 2 weeks of each other?). Truely amazing.

I can't help but to imagine there being some fairly serious mudslides from it though... I hope they aren't near any towns or villages...

What with the Pacific as well, it seems almost as though the entirety of Central America is getting a fairly serious soaking just lately.

As far as i know tha 1886 claim is wrong. Unless there have been updates from the database team at the NHC, no Category 5's have been positivley identified before 1928.

there's hardly no coverage of it on the news. Even though I believe it's stronger than Dean? The british media don't seem interested tbh. Looks impressive on the satalite

Hurricanes that don't hit the US don't get much coverage. More so on FOX, who were only reporting Dean and Felix because of a percieved threat to the US. So long as it doesn't hit thier precious country or their oil then they don't care.

Have a look at this photo taken from one of the recon aircraft inside the eye of Felix - it's amazing!

I was looking at the tracks of last years hurricanes and this years and was just wondering what would cause this years to be so much more westerly than last years, which did the usual west from africa before taking a northeastwards turn towards europe? 782px2006atlantichurricfm9.png this is the 2006 season map. I was also wondering if the lack of storms managing to get this far north, would be aiding all of the northern blocking we have been seeing? sorry bout the post in this thread, wasn't sure where to put it, but i thought that people who know the most about hurricanes, would look at this one first :-)

The reason that the storms are moving towards the west so much this year so far and not the north has been because of a particularly strong Azores High.

A more suitable thread might have been 2007 Atlantic season; general discussion. :D

The real reason is probably because the Americans are seeding and diverting the hurricanes.

It's called weather modification but they will never admit to it :D
