Oh dear, I think this is where we don't agree. I'm sorry but for Birmingham, this year would have to go down as the poorest year for storms I've ever witnessed, I'm that serious! The thunderstorm in March and Aug 12 last year beats most storms this year apart from perhaps Apr 15. 2007 of course had the Jan 18 winter storm and May 31 classic thunderstorm.

This year so far has had nothing, I'm sorry it just hasn't. My family all say the same thing, thunderstorms in the Summer and snowfall in the Winter are nothing like they used to be, trust me on that. If only I had a really good camera to record all the storms when I was a kid, I would show you what kind of storms the Midlands can get, just as intense as the ones in the SE. But all I can go on, is my memory.

I do realise you have had many near misses this year. The 29th June storm is my best so far but April 15th games some fantastic CG's. You live in North Birmingham and im just about 2 miles off the Worcs border so were likely to have some differences. Stroms are very hit and miss and i think here has been unusually lucky this year as we often miss loads! Im happy with what ive had this year though i admit July has been an awful month and not far East has had alot of fun this month.

The Thunderstorm Count here: Thunder 2009: (10) Apr 15th,28th,May 15th(2) + 1 Funnel, 16th, Jun 10th,26th,27th,29th,July 6th

How annoying. The last few days the storms have been predicted to be in the SE but today they've moved west closer to me.

I wasnt going to bother chasing these before today so I let my sister borrow my car for the day and now the storms are just over the bridge, perfect to chase.

dogs, Sadly I really give up with storms now.:o It has been too long. I have been hoping that I would see just one little storm whilst I'm camping this summer, but nothing. I think I'll take up a new hobby at this rate lol.

If circumstances were different for me , I would go over to the states with you all next year. But that will never be.

Oh well!! There's always next year for a storm or two for Glos I suppose! l:wallbash:

Wednesday 19/8/09

Pressure remains high over the eastern half of the country today. This is going to be bringing more dry weather here with lots of sunshine. To the west cloud is going to be increasing bringing some outbreaks of rain. The rain is likely to be fairly showery in nature with the risk of a thunderstorms. Highs at 27C in eastern England, 21C in western Ireland.

Thursday 19/8/09

The threat of some thundery, showery rain edging eastwards during the course of today. There is the threat of the front becoming stuck over eastern parts of the country and could produce some heavy rain here before clearing into the North Sea. Brighter, cooler weather following from the west. Some showers over Scotland and western Ireland, these heavy at times. Tops of 24C in southeast England, 18C in western Scotland.

All is not lost and as has been said, there is always September for good storm activity. Cooling upper level temps but still fairly warm surface creating steeper lapses, abit like April and May.

There is indeed. Thundery Septembers are rare but they do happen from time to time. I remember many areas had a thundery second half to September 1999, including one storm in Tyne & Wear when my house was hit by lightning.

Still looking good for Next Wednesday until Friday!! A friend sent me this info:

On Wednesday we've got a classic Spanish Plume scenario developing with high pressure to the east and a cold front and associated area of low pressure edging in from the Atlantic. Most places start Wednesday on a fine note, and for much of England and Wales it should stay fine and dry all day, but Scotland and Ireland will see the cold front pushing in from the west giving a band of heavy rain and thunderstorms. England and Wales will have lots of sunshine and as a result it'll be a hot day, with temps possibly reaching 27-28c. 28c is 83f. Under the heavy rain up north temps probably only 17-19c, so a big temperature grandiant setting up.Overnight the cold front will gradually push east and this could well set off some very heavy thuderstorms across England and Wales. Meanwhile it turns drier and cooler to the north.

Thursday will probably find the cold front strung out across Central and Eastern England giving a band of heavy rain and thunderstorms. This only gradyually clearing away into the north sea. Sunny spells and showers follow to the rest of the country on a fresh westerly wind. Still some heat left in the extreme south-east, 25c, but elsewhere much cooler, with temps of 16-20c.

Still looking good for Next Wednesday until Friday!! A friend sent me this info:

Hi Jane, we can all live in hope! Looking at the models I think at this stage, and I say that because its still a long way off, it does not look that good atm for thunderstorms, perhaps thundery rain but the models show virtually no forcing mechanisms for thunderstorms some of the ingredients are there but little else at the moment, so we will probably end up with just a damp squib...I really hope the models are wrong and my thoughts too but anyway heres hoping! :good::good::D ps...you never know our luck we might see one of these!! :D

I'm always regular, Jane. So far, so good. cool.gif

But emoticons not working either, as with storms. I feel for you. I'll be doing a fleeting trip near Gloucestershire next month so I'll keep my camera in my pocket because no point in bothering whipping it out if no storms. (But the flooding of 5th/6th September 2008 was WOAH!! blink.gif I've never seen fields look like lakes like that before.)

And thank you for inviting me back. I might be here for a while. :D

Phil.

Hi Phil, smile.gif You are always welcome here biggrin.gif

Just thought I'd mention that there will be no need to get your camera out here in Glos lwhen u pop by lol.I can guarantee you there wont be a storm in sight (unless you bring one with you lol),which I know is very unlikely as you also have suffered terribly with a lack of storms this yearsad.gif .

I'm still keeping my eye on Thursday though... Lolsmile.gif

I have not had a storm in Kilmarnock since April i think, and even that was only a few runbles and not overhead! Think i've had one day of thundery rain since but i'm not counting that as a storm.

Not sure i can really complain though since i went Storm chasing in May, got caught in flash floods in Dumbarton and went to Florida in June... :cc_confused:
