Ive seen 4 flights now from the USA.....Flying straight over our airspace,

so how come we are not taking off  very strange

They have to travel through the lower flight levels to get up to a cruising height that is deemed free of ash. It's the getting up there from airports South of Newcastle that's the problem dogs.

I'm cynical. Perhaps this is political theatre designed to end on Wednesday in time for the next party leaders' debate?

A lot of the ash is precipitating out over the ocean between UK and Iceland.

If you stormchasers can get to Germany, there are several flights over us at 30,00 ft+ currently heading to the States!

2 Major Problems with that Robin

1st = Cost

After a quick scan around Single Tickets last night I found 4 Prices from Various Airports and with different Airlines

SpanAir from Madrid to DFW Via Philadelphia is £1,300 Single

AlItalia from Rome to DFW Via Chicago (Ord) is £1,798 Single

AA From Rome via Chicago (Ord) is £1,895 Single

Luftansia direct to DFW Have no availability until 29th April.

So as well as cost the dates for flights is just not possible.

 :D

How is it that many French airports are opening today and yet the London ones remain shut, then how can Manchester open at 7pm but yet still nothing from London? Is the volcano ash now having a love in with just the SE!

There is no transparency in the decision making of NATS and other main bodies dealing with this, i wish one of the newscasters would ask the reasons behind the current status quo. Looking at todays events it does throw up some questions, are many European countries taking a chance with passanger safety or are the UK authorities unwilling to open up the London airports until the ash has completely cleared and don't want lots of people turning up with the situation unstable, if this is the case why don't they just come out and say so, also are the UK authorities being more strict regarding flying, its either safe to fly or not so todays events in Europe just confuse the situation.

Worryingly I am starting to hear of Reports that Virgin Atlantic are Cancelling all Outbound Passengers flying from LHR/LGW To The States for Fridays flights already.

Edit: There is something very very dodgy about all this Nick!

That is strange as the models all have the upper winds changing into Friday as that low moves east, really by late Thursday we should see the ash cloud beginning to edge ne and during Friday I would expect many UK airports to start opening. But of course the media don't want to say too much and would rather be sticking with their misery for the foreseeable future as that makes for better headlines!

I think what might be happening is that passengers that have been delayed against those scheduled to leave towards the weekend will be given precedence and also perhaps the planes are not in the right place given many might still be stranded in the USA and Canada. I would be very surprised if all the UK airports aren't operating at full capacity by late Friday but definitely Saturday.

All those flights are due in after 7.00pm, when they though London would be open, if it's not I would imagine they would be diverted to either an open UK airport or somewhere in Europe.

Doha to Edinburgh, B777. Not something you see very often! Due in 19:30 tonight.

Re: the BA jets, I suspect they will go to Spain if deemed too risky for UK arrivals.
