.... still 11.0C to the 29th

http://hadobs.metoffice.com/hadcet/cet_info_mean.html

Looking like ending up just below 11.0C after adjustments.

Perhaps they will adjust it up a touch!

Still think 10.9c or even 10.8c will be the final figure.

A notable cold night or 2 last week for late may,3.1c here.

A perfectly average may basicly

De Bilt, The Netherlands, had a temperature of 10.5. May 2010 is among the 10 coldest of the last 110 years. KNMI says in the new climate the return rate of this month is once in the 100 years.

De Bilt, The Netherlands, had a temperature of 10.5. May 2010 is among the 10 coldest of the last 110 years. KNMI says in the new climate the return rate of this month is once in the 100 years.

And in Berlin, it is amongst the 15 coldest months since 1900. France saw generally a below average month although it doesn't stand out from the average as much as it does in neighbouring countries.

In fact in De Bilt it even ranks 25th coolest since 1706.

The coolest months:

1714 [10.2]

1717 [10.2]

1721 [10.2]

1740 [7.5]

1741 [9.8]

1742 [9.5]

1756 [10.4]

1763 [10.3]

1767 [9.9]

1772 [10.2]

1793 [10.4]

1795 [10.0]

1799 [10.3]

1803 [9.6]

1805 [9.4]

1810 [9.4]

1814 [10.0]

1837 [10.2]

1845 [9.6]

1955 [10.0] [we had to wait 110 years!]

1957 [10.3]

1962 [10.0]

1987 [10.2]

1991 [10.0]

Not bad at all if i may say!

Big downwards adjustment this month

Final unadjusted figure was 11.1

Adjusted final figure 10.7 - half a degree below the long term average. Coolest May since 1996, first below average May since 1996

That's quite a drop! Only 0.3 away so happy enough with that...

6.2C on the 11th makes it my coldest birthday yet in the CET series (since 1985), beating the 6.6C figure for 11th May 1995.

The 12th was even colder - a modest 5.6C.

Odd bits and pieces of stats that jump out initially from the finalised figures

The night of the 13th was the first sub-zero May night in the CET zone since 1996, the coldest May night (equally with 2 in 1979) since 1967 and the 26th (I think) example of a sub-zero May night since 1878 - equal 15th coldest May night in that series (bear in mind this was on a scan through, I might have missed one or two)

The 12th was the coldest May day since 1997, so coldest of the 21st Century so far.

Conversely, whilst the individual 18.1 of the 23rd has been beaten fairly recently, the heatwave of 21-24 had 4 consecutive days in excess of 17 degrees - the first tme since 1989 that May has produced such a heatwave (ironically also on the 21-24 of that month and also with a 17,17,18,17 type return)

I thought a downward reduction was in order.

Some of the provisional figures for the nights looked a bit dodgy when they went up.

Very pleased with the outcome however - 0.1C off my guess.

Just 0.1C off my guess, so I too am happy with that. 5 out of 6 months below average would have been almost unthinkable just a couple of years ago! Although some have been only marginally below, it's still an impressive run.

Yes, at least it was presented as unthinkable at that time. That speculative bubble thankfully has been burst -and good to see that May has extended that reality check - however modestly. Below the average line is below the average line, however little.smile.gif

Well I just hope that this 'cooler' phase continues for some time yet!

Very interesting statistics there, January 2010 had the most negative deviation, and 2008 saw seven below average months, at four already only 2001 and 2009 are beating us as well as 2008

The downward correction to May also gives us (just) the second consecutive season below the 71-00 average - Spring 2010 comes in 0.1 degrees below the 71-00 average

Very impressive given where we have come from, to get 2 seasons below average in a row.

Anyway 10.7C is still quite cool considering what we saw in the 2nd half of the month, just goes to show how cool the first half of the month was. Impressive stuff!

the heatwave of 21-24 had 4 consecutive days in excess of 17 degrees - the first time since 1989 that May has produced such a heatwave (ironically also on the 21-24 of that month and also with a 17,17,18,17 type return)

Speaking of heatwave 30c was reached somewhere in London on the 24/5/10; it was at least forcasted to do so. If so May 2010 will be one of the few sub 11c CET Mays if not the only one to achieve 30c anywhere in the UK.

Offically the high was something like 28.5C on that day, whilst hot it wasn't quite as hot as was expected by the meso-models on the day, though probably in isloated spots 30C may have been reached, but offically it wasn't reach I believe.
