Just had what was no doubt the back-edge CF going over marked by a brief squall-line crossing over. NW seems to be down for the past hour so relying on visual obs and the backup Met Office site & raintoday. I expect from now on anyway it'll be the wind gradient from the low pressure situated to the North as it travels NorthEastwards is whats to be looking out for into the afternoon, with convective showers possible by early evening. Sheltered here behind the 410m asl Eastern facing slopes of the Moor so not getting the wind gusts many others are reporting.

I can certainly concur with that Coast. Here in Bognor we now have a Gale 8 gusting up to Gale 10. Getting very stormy indeed out there with the heavy rain as well. Certainly the type of weather that can spawn tornadoes down here. I should be going to the Post Office but will delay it until around 3:00pm as it seems a bit scary at the moment with those high gusts.

Damn your right. Met Office Radar & xcweather is the only update out there so far. everything else is either down or intermittent, and its all relayed through the Met Office so I fail to see what the issue is..weird.

Windy and rainy here. Can't say it's especially windy and rainy, though I hear it will get worse later.

Only 1.5mm of rain so far.

Winds are increasing further in the NW now as the depression is moving eastwards.

Valid: 00:00 Tuesday, 6th September 2011 - 23:59 Tuesday, 6th September 2011

Scotland, Northern England and Ireland

Central, Southern and SE England

Synopsis:An occluded, but vigorous, low pressure system is forecast to become located across the north of Scotland during the course of Tuesday, bringing a highly cyclonic environment to all areas of the UK. An active frontal zone associated with the low pressure is forecast to gradually clear away to the south and east during the day, with then many areas experiencing a cool and convective west or north-westerly air mass. It should be noted that whilst not directly convective related, wind gusts of up to 50mph to 60mph are possible across exposed areas of the north and west of the UK through Tuesday.

Discussion:

The primary area for convective activity on Tuesday is across many areas of Scotland, Northern England and Ireland. A showery and convective post-frontal air mass is expected across these areas during the day and forecast atmospheric soundings signal that despite depressed surface temperatures a completely unstable atmosphere is forecast with temperatures of around 13C or 14C or higher.

At the moment a general 300 to 400j/kg of SBCAPE is forecast with LI values generally ranging between -1 or -2. Frequent moderate or heavy showers are forecast to develop during the day within the unstable air mass and given cloud tops up to 15 to 18,000ft there is a slight risk of thunderstorms anywhere within the highlighted region during tomorrow. The wrap around occlusion associated with the surface low pressure may well bring more extensive frontal cloud and prohibit convection across Scotland, but away from this area a convective day is expected. With some significant DLS (0-6KM 20KT to 40KT) particularly across Ireland and Northern England then some cells may well become quite organised and produce a risk of some torrential downpours, hail and lightning. A general lack of helicity across the northern half of the country signals little risk of any funnel or tornadic activity and the showers will soon quickly move through as well given strong low and mid-level wind speeds.

The secondary risk zone is associated with the surface frontal zone as it moves across parts of Central, Southern and South-east England. I have highlighted this zone simply because of the thermodynamics evident tomorrow in association with what is likely to be quite an active frontal zone. The cold front could well be a focal point for funnel clouds and perhaps an isolated tornado as well, but it should be stressed that these situations are extremely difficult to forecast and nothing more than highlighting the risk can be achieved. What is highly impressive however is the amount of DLS across the frontal zone with 0-6KM wind speeds ranging between 50KT and 70KT which is extreme and there is also forecast to be quite a significant amount of helicity (200-250m2/s2) in direct association with the surface front as well, with the potential for sharp changes in wind direction within the lower layers of the atmosphere within a relatively short time period. Given the extreme variables present, the area has been given a slight risk for the threat of some heavy precipitation in association with the frontal zone itself and also the risk of funnel clouds, perhaps a tornado and some all round very gusty winds in association with the surface front.

Lots of rattling and banging going on outside now and looking out my back window I can see a HUGE branch (1/4 of the tree) of a very large Chestnut Tree down into a neighbours garden.

Poor old lady, it will cost her to get that removed, still at least it missed the house.
