I thought I would just pop in here from all the way down south in Essex. Its exceptionally cold here, for this part of the world anyway. Its now -13c and still falling with snow cover for over a week. So often I am jealous of your winter weather but for once it looks like you guys are mild. Shame really as I was hoping to come skiing in Scotland in the half term but it doesn't look worth it.

I can see this thread becoming alive during the second half of the month with lots of snow potential thanks to arctic northerly airstreams. The south has had all the action the last 2 weeks, its time for the north now!!! - and probably well into March as well.. Arctic blasts in late feb/early march in the north can bring cold every bit as comparable to a deep northeasterly/easterly in the depths of january and quite often more snow.

Indeed, it does look as though normality will soon return i.e. colder in the north than the south! The blocking setup looks more favourable to Arctic airmasses moving south, northerlies and/or nearby cold troughing rather than continental airmasses, so it may finally be our turn. Hopefully troughing is nearby with occasional westerly or easterly tilts in the flow allowing for more widespread snowfall particularly for the snow-starved east and northeast (I say that with no bitterness as we did hog the snowfall last year but we haven't even had a cm covering yet!).

I've got an idea to create a blog full of the best pictures from each of the main regions of Scotland and then to have a vote for a top 10 to show the world the best of Scotland. And perhaps the best pictures of Scotland in the 4 seasons and the best for various other sections such as sunsets, mountains, sheep....

Any more suggestions?

Here we go: http://forum.netweather.tv/blog/306-the-best-of-scotland-the-photos/

Let's see how this works out! Any suggestions of photos to be put into any of these sections would be great and any ideas of other sub-sections such as Wildlife, Sunsets, the Seasons would also be much appreciated!

I think it would be great if we could have a poll on which is the best photos from each of the areas and see which is the best photos overall - a top ten perhaps of all the photos included or just the chosen best from the each of the sections. It would be great to show these photos and the best of each of the different and diverse areas of Scotland, or a top 10 best of Scotland or even a Calendar.

To get the best photographs tomorrow you're going to have to move down south. Great snow cover and exceptionally low temperatures will make for some great snaps.

I think I'm going to do this:

1) Get all the best pictures for the different areas of Scotland - and some welcome additons from fellow Kilters would be great.

2) With the expertise of the Kilted Thread, get a top 10 of each of the different areas

3) Choose the best picture from each of the areas to create a definitive look at the very best of each of the areas and highlight the diversity of Scotland's land

4) Choose a top 10 from all of the best pictures from the shortlists to show Scotland's very best pictures

5) Choose from the best from Seasons - combine a calendar to show the best of Scotland throughout the year

Can't wait to get this started!

Super idea oh Camp one. I spend a lot of my time in Scotland trying to persuade people to vote for Independence. As a result I have loads of great photos. I will collate them over the next few days and forward them to you.

Just added two pictures into the Highland section!

Gosh, there are a helluva lot of great photos available: Skye, Morar, Glencoe, Torridon, Cairngorms and all the other places inbetween.

I was about to say, looked like trolls night out, last night. Funniest thing last night was youngest HC getting confused between trolling and trawling.

Trolls specialise in 'projection' if that helps with the definition. http://tinyurl.com/a7a2r

Not sure whether that aids with photography.

GFS00Z looking not bad again.

ECM less pretty.

Meto teasing again?

UK Outlook for Wednesday 15 Feb 2012 to Friday 24 Feb 2012:

Wintry showers are likely over some northern and eastern parts of the UK on Wednesday, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle more likely elsewhere. It will probably remain unsettled during the second half of next week and northern parts of the UK will probably see periods of rain, with snow possible on high ground, perhaps to low levels at times in the north and east. The south and west will remain drier and brighter, although with rain possible at times. Many areas should see temperatures around normal for a time next week, but it is likely to become colder than average by the following week. With the weather likely to remain unsettled, showers or longer spells of rain are likely across the UK, with further sleet and snow in places.

UK Outlook for Saturday 25 Feb 2012 to Saturday 10 Mar 2012:

The last few days of February and beginning of March are likely to see changeable weather. Temperatures are probably going to be average or below average for the time of year. Being late February/early March, this suggests that overnight frosts are still likely, especially during any quieter interludes. Showers and longer spells of rain are possible with an ongoing risk of snow, mainly in the north and east.

I imagine it will be an early, warm spring then.....

Was just looking at the same charts, SS. Our dreams are still a week away and I'm starting to sound like a broken record too, ©Cheggers.

I guess I'll keep on with the barn conversion just in case. :p

06Z ensembles show a good match between the op, control and average

t850Aberdeenshire.png

Will todays 12Z's follow this, in particular the ECM?

Meto update:

UK Outlook for Thursday 16 Feb 2012 to Saturday 25 Feb 2012:

Apart from the odd shower, much of the UK will be dry on Thursday with temperatures near normal. A weakening band of rain though will move southeastwards across the country on Friday with colder and windier conditions following on behind. Next weekend is likely to remain rather unsettled, cold and windy with spells of rain or showers and the risk of nighttime frosts. Some sleet and snow is likely over the hills and perhaps to lower levels at times in the north and east, with the best of any drier and brighter spells likely in the south and southwest. The unsettled and rather cold conditions are then likely to continue throughout the rest of the forecast period with further spells of rain and perhaps sleet and snow.

Updated: 1150 on Sat 11 Feb 2012

UK Outlook for Sunday 26 Feb 2012 to Sunday 11 Mar 2012:

06Z (aye, ah know...)

Would make for a nice weekend anyway.

Has it not been the 06Z runs that have started the decline of any cold potential, so nice to see it start to go the other way, although our snow shield in the Central belt looks in very good form. :( Edited by Cheggers

Hope that snow shield switches itself off before then!

Overcast today still feels quite chilly out there, some biting cold air.
