Flashes become much less frequent now, must've gone through a short phase of intensification and now weakened, the strikes don't really correlate that well with any heavier precip on the radar strangely, but it all makes for interesting viewing smile.png

You don't need to have much precip for high based storms to be electrified - can provide the best viewed lightning as not much rain to obscure the strikes!

Manchester aren't giving anything away short-term at least, however Nottingham is going for heavy rain from 3am. Even a nudge in this system of 20 miles north will do me just fine. http://en.allmetsat.com/metar-taf/united-kingdom-ireland.php?icao=EGNX

Nothing here in Southend yet, going to stay up for a while yet though to see how this plays out, certainly all very north-easterly as it comes off the continent in terms of electrification.

Naff all here in Medway thus far...it is looking increasingly like the thundery line will slide just to the North of here, might scrape close you never know.

Will hopefully get some decent flashes at least, fingers crossed!!!

Good luck all!!

Indeed! Low and mid level Cu steaming in from the NNE/NE here! Good potential for a wee bit of shear I suspect.

The old MetO radar gives you a fairly decent idea of direction of the rain!

It is Outflow from that Storm Cluster in the Crouch Estuary, it is literally screaming out above my head heading towards Medway

That cell is to the south of Colchester now and it's not flashing, just very heavy rain.

I think it's safe to say this one has died, no lightning for the past 15 mins, but the majority of the strikes I saw were pure CG's. Very impressive, sad I didn't hear any thunder with it but heyho :)

Running the lightning detection loop, the storms of Benelux are going to hit EA and I think and miss Kent/Sussex/Surrey altogether (sorry for the pessimism!)

Facebook's wonderful - friends of mine in north Bristol are reporting thunder and lightning. Can anyone confirm this?

Yep, seems so. Still, I've broken my long running night lightning duck at last, even if it was a brief flash 30 miles away :D

what lightning detection are you using?

The MetO detector (you can select lightning down the right hand side)

That second cell appears to be just rain too! Teaming it down now.

Quite a bit of a northerly wind component along the Thames... Southend 020*, London City 010*, London Heathrow 030* - I know the surface wind is generally not that of the upper winds... but it's about 30*s off, so good indication that the storms may probably drift west instead of north westerly direction.

Yes I live about 10 miles North of Bristol and can confirm a couple of flashes and rumbles a short while ago. Moved off into Bristol Channel now.

Lettuce ME that lot over Germany!!

I've been frantically running radar/satellite loops in the hope for some southerly shunt on those storms/downpours and it seems to be lacking - some hint but unfortunately the radar doesn't let you know whether it's upper, mid or lower level cloud.

Not too many lightning reports coming in :cray:
