Yeah, Belgium have got some great footballers, Scotland now bottom of the group. Surely it's time to sack Levein. I could do with an epic pub run to cheer myself up too. help.gif

Was washing the floor in the kitchen in late afternoon after spilt mud on it and was watching the antics of the birds at their feeders There were about fourty birds of assorted species but those that took my eye were a woodpecker attacking the peanuts and a pheasant and a robin eating the spilt seeds on the grass who ended up having a massive fight over the seeds. Really something to behold. Another non scientific forecast for a cold winter.

Really there has been no insect life for about 3 weeks now and our stubbles are pretty grain free good for us, but not for the birds as demonstrated by the numbers at the feeders.

Currently 1c with a ground frost

Jeezo, it gets earlier every year! When I mentioned a few days ago about possible snow prospects 'down the line', I was really thinking about longer term, you know, perhaps December, late November at the earliest after a month or two of aesthetically pleasing but fruitless endeavour with the cold never quite being strong enough, the blocking not being quite in the right place. And now we have charts like this: http://cdn.nwstatic.co.uk/gfsimages/gfs.20121016/18/216/h500slp.png

and this http://cdn.nwstatic.co.uk/gfsimages/gfs.20121016/12/228/h500slp.png appearing in consecutive runs. Not only that, but the cold pools are relatively well intact and we even manage to get a reload out of the 12Z http://cdn.nwstatic.co.uk/gfsimages/gfs.20121016/12/336/h850t850eu.png

We've already been treated to some pretty impressive synoptic possibilities and it's only October. Possibilities are all they are of course, for the moment, but even as the disappointment of last winter showed, the general trend of increased high latitude winter blocking along with a southerly tracking jet that was so apparent in the great winter of 09/10 remains intact. Whether we can cash in on that increased blocking, or whether those trends will be outweighted by other factors, remains to be seen.

Awfy wet here! 4c and the house lights have been on since we got up. River is rising again, crossing my fingers for all the poor folks living alongside the Cuddy again that it doesn't burst again so soon after the last time.

Tried to post a pic, but not having much luck!

Helllooo!

It's a dreich day and no mistake - cold, dark and wet. Ventured out with the children on foot just now and actually the rain became a little sleety (this is the only highlight in an otherwise miserable day).

Edited - my Mum just rang to say it is snowing right now in Kingussie.

Some decent snow on the Ochil tops yesterday, heres hoping that the prospective wintry incursion from the north next week gives us a bit of the white stuff at lower levels. Pretty dreadful here in Alloa today!

It was a cold morning in Inverness, bottomed out at about -3'C with very thick freezing fog. Cleared up gradually in the sun, but still a chilly day with temperatures not getting above 5'C.

Temperatures did not manage to drop below 0C as the rain arrive but it another morning akin to a cold, wet January day. -8C at Braemar last night, snowfall on the hills possibly at some lower levels for a time. Models showing a wee indian summer for england, possibly a northerly blast later in the month.

The Met-O weather warning looks a little far west for the time being, the heaviest of the rain is heading this way.

Cold air starting to build to the north...although it doesn't want to come and play, yet ;)

Really cold outside today as the temperature struggled up to 4c this afternoon under completely cloudy skies. No rain as yet. House lights on all afternoon with a real midwinter feel about it. Must be one of the coldest October days.
