Had a fantastic snow shower in Consett about 8.00 this morning, giving a very quick covering. Been a wintry mix of showers all day here.

Decent snow shower here just before 7.00 this morning but struggled to settle.

Had a heavy shower about an hour ago but just rain/sleet with the odd flake thrown in.

This is a bit more like it!

Moderate snow shower here now which has left a dusting.

Just had another snow shower in the last 15 minutes which has left a light covering on

everything.

Is there anybody there? lol!

Just wish the 850s were a couple of degrees lower as the showers have kept coming in the last couple of hours. Just rain/hail here, no frost here to much cloud and wind off the sea.

Coldest morning of the winter so far! It was -3.7c around 7am, currently -2.8c and looking very white with a thick frost on everything...... Shame it's only going to last another couple of days, really love this weather set up!

Last night's dusting of snow has pretty much survived the day,so must have been close to an

ice day and temperatures are now plummeting.

Seems to be some fluctuations with the temp here even though it's dead calm, got down to -1.2c then jumped up to -0.3c and now it's back down to -0.9c. No fog here.

Fortunate to see the Lake District in all its winter splendour today - travelling to and from Carlisle through the central lakes and the back o' skiddaw. Temperatures hovered between 1 and -3 degrees at various stages in the journey. N Cumbria seemed to have a sharper frost last night compared to the south lakes and there was much ice and hoar frost in the Caldbeck-Carlisle area. I also encountered some freezing fog near Greystoke taking a slight detour, but this quickly dissapeared heading west on the A66.

The fells looked superb with stark clarity, Blencathra and sharp edge etched in white was a picture postcard - almost alpine. There was a coating of very thin ice on parts of Rydal Water and Grasmere.

I do love this king of weather - it is the best weather for winter walking on the fells and after a snowy day is the kind of weather I long for during christmas. Tomorrow should be very similiar though there could be more stubborn freezing fog after what is looking like a very cold night with minima widely down to -5 degrees or below.

What a pity we couldn't reserve the current synoptics for the 24th-27th Dec period - which would most likely have brought a particularly glorious christmas period with 4 dry sunny frosty days in the Lake District - going off the forecast for tomorrow and Thursday. I do hope we get rid of the unsettled spell in time for christmas or at least exchange it for a decent polar blast from the NW.. the thought of dark grey leaden skies, heavy rain with sleet/snow on higher ground and gales with temps in the mid single digits is very unappealing indeed, mind its been a long time since we have had to endure a christmas period of such weather, and it would be a cold wet affair not the mild wet affairs of some christmas' which would add to the general awfulness.

Not as cold as yesterday morning, it's -0.9c and temperatures have risen throughout the night across Cumbria, must be due to the sheet of high cloud.

Light snow this morning left a light sugar dusting, although that has mostly melted now. I'm sick of this black ice!
