A few flurries about here in the last 30 mins, the snow we had yesterday has frozen over well abd isnt going anywhere fast with temps of 0.4c. id love that band of ppn over notts and derby to move south and give us another dusting on top of what we already have.

Think some would be happy with those depths.

What stands out to me though, look at the depths in the south T+129. 10CM

T+153. 7cm

Thaw setting in?

I'm completely new to all this so may have interpreted it wrong. However do those charts suggest pretty much everywhere is looking at a minimum of 5cm of snow?

I was just thinking of Feb 09 yesterday. The snow in Leicester was incredible. It was the good old days of being a college student; went to the local golf course which just had acres of untouched, fresh snow which was well over ankle deep...

:D

Yellow Alert of Snow for East Midlands :

Derbyshire & Leicestershire

Valid from: 0900 on Fri 18 Jan 2013

Valid to: 2355 on Fri 18 Jan 2013

As the weather breaks down, there is the potential for a spell of snow to spread from the southwest. As winds strengthen, blizzard conditions are a possibility, especially over high ground. Accumulations of 2-5 cm are possible quite widely and in some locations, especially higher ground, 15 cm are possible.

Issued at: 1233 on Tue 15 Jan 2013

That warning doesn't really affect the East Midlands though, the yellow barely clips us, maybe Fridays event will be one for the West Midlands rather than us, although it would not take much of a shift to affect us again

Met Office only going as far as Friday night. Predicted snow depths suggest that system could push Eastwards over Notts and Lincs on Sat and Sun. Further warnings to follow, though met office confidence is still low.

The warning will most likely change a few times before friday comes around so you never know :)

Looking at the GFS and UKMO 12Z'S

It's hard not to get into ramping mode blink.png

Potentially another great snow event for us in the East Midlands again IF it was to come off

Has anyone else noticed the band of preicip moving east over Ireland at the mo? Looks pretty organised will it mush its way over the uk or stall and fizz out over Wales?

Just checked the GFS 12z and wow! If that came off then most of the East Midlands would be covered in a deep blanket of snow for the rest of the month after this weekend! And the Pennines would have huge snow drifts.

We had some light flurries today near Mansfield (work), not sure if any here at home. Added nothing to the covering though.

Blimey, never seen ensembles as flat as that all the way out on the 12z. More like looking at ensembles for somewhere in eastern Europe where the permutations are less!

Well after all the uncertainty about snowfall yesterday, things turned out as had been expected with Nottingham, derby, Leicester doing best in the region, as well as regions further north and east.

Now we potentially are well placed by the end of this week for further snowfall and remaining on the cold side!

This is very uncertain, But there is more potential for the east midlands, and especially the north east midlands, to be in a sweet spot.

The other alternative is that the snow slides south missing most of us all together although seems unlikely at the moment.

Undercutting south easterlies don't need hugely low uppers to produce snow. Infact -1 or -2 can be ample as dew points will be so low.

As things stand, ESP with the gfs, the midlands are perfectly placed.
