Interesting journey to Cumbria yesterday with full snow cover here (which has hardly melted on return today) and within 10 miles distance west side of Bradford / saltaire absolutely none.

Just shows how localised boxing nite was!

Took a hike upto the highest point of the North York Moors on Urra Moor this afternoon (454m asl). Perfect weather for it with clear blue skies, crunchy snow and temps well below freezing!

Couldn't believe how bad the roads were on Saturday morning. Never seen snow that heavy on trees before!

Yes no snow on low ground here - but ground above 450 metres is fully coated so I white scene if you look upwards and a white scene early and late on low ground thanks to a sparkling frost - pity we missed out on the snow low down, today would have been a cracker for sledging etc..

Still loads of snow in Sheff. The top 2 arefrom late yesterday and the main road one from Satarday evening.

Although i have some height, these are only 2 miles from the city centre.

Roads are disgusting in Sheffield.  Proof that private companies are not fit to run public services. Main bus routes not ploughed or properly gritted. Sheet ice across most roads with huge craters in them. To be honest this is the worst I've seen Sheffields roads since the gritters went on strike back in the 70's.

At least the rising temps are helping but the council are not.

morning all, well with this colder spell comming to an end, which all good things do i guess, its time to reflect on what we have just had, a week of frosts, lying snow since boxing day, a true winters feel about the weather, and my son built his first snowman. compared to last winter this has been wonderful, would be nice to get in one more cold snowy spell before the spring takes hold.

It'd be nice to actually see a snowflake for some of us!

There hasn't been any falling snow here since 31st March 2013 and none lying at 0900 since 24th March 2013. The previous longest gap here was between 19th February 1991 and 12th January 1993 and we're rapidly approaching that.

Roads still bad but improving. So one has to be cautious. Still only half hearted attempt to actually salt. I can only presume the company Amey hasn't actually got much salt which is why they are driving about but not really doing anything.

I hate these last nights of cold and snow before it melts tomorrow :( I really wish i could stop the mild coming in. Its really sad lol :(

We cant complain though really, most of the country is still waiting for their fix of snow and we had a great boxing day night of it and then nearly a week of lying snow and near ice days. lets hope its not the last of the winter!

On the way to work near clumber park, still loads of snow about. Amazing to say it's been 4days of solid cover!

Great fun last night coming out of the pub before midnight. Melt water on ice so you were sliding away. Car frosted up but the road had cleared a lot when I had first came down.

A lot of roads still bad in Sheffield with Council still not doing anything. Shocking state of affairs. Good job is not a long freeze otherwise business would really start to struggle.

Nothing at all here in Cheshire, mum neighbour across the road back in Sheffield showed me a picture. I'm not looking forward to the drive this evening to get to mum. Although the woodhead will be picturesque.

Yes Barry, that shortwave is tracking nicely along on current output, its uncannily similar to last Friday isnt it. A nice tease post from Ian F too, so the METO are watching it. It would be fantastic to get snow again so soon :D

NMM currents take, seems like the track is currently towards the south and also seems to be less cold air in the mix, maybe just a high ground event this time. Could be wrong! looking forward to tracking the progress over the next 70 hours. Beats looking at the current zonal trains being shown on the models!

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole. A warm first half to to the month averaged out the cold second half. View the full blog here
