Have DCC got any gritters out yet? seems to have taken them by surprise

Havn't seen any all afternoon and most from overnight would have washed away. Is getting bad out there now, hope everyone stays safe on the roads and be prepared with a shovel or old floor matt to use as traction if stuck. There are only a couple of artery roads from the valleys and once one car gets stuck on both then higher regions at a standstill.

Just seen 1st gritter go through east bound . A bit late as traffic west bound at a stand still which will make roads worse as snow likely to build up.

That really is depressing lol.

Enjoy.

Am i right in thinking these showers are going to miss here?

they seem to be coming in on a weird angle.

Its difficult to say as it looks like a low pressure cell looking at the curve they are now making whereas earlier they were all easterly/n.easterly. I think it could be the two airmasses east and west of pennines bumping into each other.

Would think with daytime maxes dropping away more would possibly be of snow and they are defo getting heavier up here.

Warning for drivers in rush hour Gateshead to Consett. Roads A692 as I can see is now sheet ice, no movement west bound. Police reportedly are closing various routes with gradients due to the roads not been salted or washed away throughout the day.

Stay safe and be prepared, ensure your tanks are full and have grit, spade, mobiles and essentials in cars.

Seems DCC caught out again.

We've had numerous weather warnings for ice in recent weeks and it's been fine, then we get this and there's no warnings.

If the council rely on the Met Office warnings that could be how they've been caught out.

Just about to leave. Let's see how long this takes, Longbenton to Stanley.

Dont think North gets enough attention as we are all used to it as they say, shame the councils are not.

I would avoid a692, not sure what its like from Chester le St but being a hardened Stanlier Im sure you will be fine.

Well that was fun while it last, big area of showers now moving from north sea around durham/sunderland/tyneside areas... suspect these to be mainly sleet/rain near coast and a bit wet snow away from higher hills. I would expect these to die away over the next hour or so though.

A692 County Durham - Very slow traffic on A692 in both directions between the A693 junction in Consett and the B6310 Front Street junction in Burnopfield, because of snow.

Dying out/not amounting to much as they approach Durham. This will be another non-event away from higher ground.

The traffic is again moving in both directions on A692 think the incline from Dipton to Leadgate was the main cause which seems to have sorted itself out now traffic moving over the salt.

Snow line has dropped to about 50asl looking over the valley.

Well, some very wintry scenes around these parts today with some prolonged  and sometimes heavy snow showers

leaving almost a 3 inch covering now.

Managed to avoid the A692  on the way home from work (past experience) and came back tanfield lea way then some back roads

up Harperley which were very quiet!

Wise choice Cloud, the A692 running through Dipton was gridlocked and pure ice throughout the school run. If temps drop off could be tricky overnight.

Showers look to be fizzling out before they get more inland but snow line dropping off towards coastal areas now that the low cell in the North Sea has formed.

Not sure if they're is much more snow to come tonight but the sky outside has that lovely orange salmon hue and reflecting of the snowfields. Something much missed and hope more get in on the action over the next few weeks.

Hopefully if the Azores high can remain displaced more wintry interludes could prevail at short notice. Not expecting much melt on the hills for the next few days so should be some on show for any whightseeing.

Edit: another light shower but mainly grapple. Nearly 10cm lying now so not bad and more forecast for Wed from meto. Might recycle the xmas tree for next year at this rate.

Yes,that's probably it for the showers off the north sea for the moment, although still worth keeping an eye on just in case.

Might be some  snow about on Wednesday as the front coming in from the West stalls over the region.

Tomorrow snow chances as i see it...

Front pushing from the west around midday will make slow erratic progress east across the region, some places will see snow, some more than others as it will become patchy in nature as the evening/night progresses. elevation not much of an issue tomorrow as surface and air temp will be pretty cold, though through the night it will turn to sleet/rain lower down.

latest euro4 model has less chance of snow this run compared to earlier run and not as intense as latest bbc forecast shows so, best wait for morning runs.

Looks lovely who said we don't do well from sliders? That looks like it's stalling over us :p

Don't hold your breath. Looks to me much more like the usual fragmentation and fizzling out as it reaches us.

Well MO haven't put out any warnings yet so they probably don't know what's going to happen yet meaning there's still hope for us :p

With all due respect, I think you are being far too optimistic with regard to the prospects of snow. It may happen, but the charts plus experience says it's highly unlikely.

I hope not just spent an hour hauling 1/2 a tonne off the drive to get car out for work, was light work if you catch the snow early while still light and easy to push.

Bring it on though as would prefer a region wide event whilst the cold has set in.

Winds seem to be veering around a mini low atm blowing the showers around.
