Forget it!!

Just checked the precip type radar and it shows rain. This Winter is sucks!!

I don't get it? You would admit that you are not in a favourable location at the best of times but snow falling to sea level, surely you were not realistically expecting so under this scenario?

These systems always seem to grind to a halt when a low tracks from the south west and comes up against colder air to the east.  It will be rain here, but maybe the tops of the hills will get a dusting before the milder weather wins out.

Ian, I couldn't believe it either pure madness!

It's a slog up to Red Tarn in walking boots so I take my hat off to anyone who does it in wellies!! But to go onto the high Fells is madness, the local papers yesterday told how a very experienced local mountaineer died on Helvelyn on Tuesday, he had done all of Europes highest peaks so to die on your local mountain is tragic

It shows just how dangerous Helvelyn can be.

Andy

Yes -  he was local to you I understand - I didn't realise he was so experienced - I have climbed the headwall on Helvellyn by a winter route just the once once and tunneling through the cornice was the worst bit - can't really say what has gone wrong but so tragic.

Ian

Are there any accumulations for those who are getting snow?

Turning to rain now.

Still snowing in New York, even though it shows sleet on BBC weather.

From what I've been reading, it seems that there is a bit of rain on it's leading edge, before it gradually turns to snow. There may yet be hope for those of us who are further inland!

Started with light rain about an hour ago, but now turning into a sleety wet snow mix. We may just about squeeze about a temporary settling if the precip becomes heavier aiding evaporative cooling, but it would be a very temporary cover as milder uppers and less conducive dewpoints move in.

Ground above about 400 metres should easily see a cover, with this sticking above 600 metres.

So today will go down as the 11th day of snow falling and the first one of Feb 2015.

Snowing here for the last 20 minutes or so.

Still quite light and not settling but there's a lot of precipitation heading in some I expect some lying before it starts to turn back to rain.
