Sunshine village, Banff was the first ski resort to open in Canada this year. Great conditions ... not surprising with nearly a metre a snow in the last week.

I’ve got a trip booked for Kvitfjell, Norway on 26th November.

A bit concerned at the moment with the forecasts. Just hoping there’s no blocking in the wrong places and we get at least a westerly polar maritime flow at some stage before the holiday!

Todays GFS 12z (albeit past day 10), would be an acceptable solution for Ski resorts in Scandinavia and the Alps, with a significant improvement in snow cover. Days 11-13 below.

This is thanks to generally NW flow with the jet digging south through the Med.

How much snow cover is needed for ski pistes to open ?

Going to Kvitfjell within the Lillehammer ski resorts next Saturday!

The forecast keeps changing between a few cms and 20 cms.

The snow canyons have already started a day ago with minus temperatures predicted.

Keep an eye on the Webcams. You're looking for a lot more than 20cm bottom, middle and top to ski or snowboard bud.

I’m wondering how much snow the snow canyons can produce in 7 days.

Hope the precipitation projections increase for next week too.

Fingers crossed for you. From the webcams it looks a lovely resort to ski with the pistes running through the trees. The resort certainly needs some snow though - the current situation must be very unusual. But with the temperatures staying well below zero over the next week let's hope the forecast snowfall, combined with the 100 snow cannons spread over the 25 pistes and operating 24 hours/day, can enable the piste teams to open a good number of runs.

To answer your question about "how much" snow a cannon can produce it depends on temperature, humidity and cannon model, but they can certainly produce quite a lot. This according to TechnoAlpin:

The TR10, the fan gun with the biggest snow output currently on the market, produces 10 truck loads of snow per hour under optimal conditions.

I hope you have a great holiday. 🤞

There’s a few runs opening this weekend in Kvitfjell thanks to a combination of the snow production and snowfall since Tuesday and more forecast!

Fabulous!!...I'm heading out to Austria for a few days next week -- meeting my son who has just completed an Anwärter course in Kaprun -we're heading across to Mayrhofen for skiing and a beer or two  Wednesday to Friday. I've been checking the webcams and the Alps charts plus forecasts on here.  Looking Ok for early December and a nice top up of snow currently on the cards for Thursday.

Hello All!

Well the snow is building up again in Zermatt after a ‘slow’ October/November even losing the World Cup event shared with Cervinia.

Just returned to the UK for a visit but heading back to Zermatt before Xmas. For anyone planning to visit over 100km of pistes are now open and good depths are to be had-over a foot on the mountain. Some lift improvements over the summer and by this time next year even non skiers will be able to get from Zermatt to Cervinia as a new lift system opens.

Where ever you are off to this season enjoy yourselves and if it’s Zermatt and your doing the Sunnegga run I’ll see you after 4 in the Cervo bar opposite the bottom lift for a quick snifter!😁

Looks amazing. Keep that snow fresh in Salzburgerland until I visit in February. 😉

Yep, its cold. Ideally, could just do with fresh fall to make perfect conditions. Where you going to min Feb ?

I'm spending this week and the Christmas holiday in the German Black Forest and was hoping to enjoy a couple of days skiing the small resort of Feldberg (1,450m), near the lake at Titisee (880m) where I'm staying. But look what the nasty mild weather sweeping over NW Europe has done. 😟
Oh well, at least I've got a week in Meribel at the end of Jan to look forward to.
