It's 32.4C which makes it the hottest day of the year here. Very warm in the house at 29c. Only one more day tomorrow to get through!

Anyone else notice the humidity rising? Its gone up to 44% here and starting to feel a bit sticky and uncomfortable in a different way. Still 28c inside despite windows open due to there being no breeze to mix the air out of the house.

Another lovely balmy evening supper on terrace.  Glorious morning, if slightly hazy cloud and definitely hotter and more humid than this time yesterday.  Currently Meto have us at 24c and net weather at 28c, both with around 50% humidity.

Well just recorded 32.7C making today the hottest day of the year and definately our hottest day of the last few years. Humidity is at 29% so still a very dry heat with very little in the way of any breeze. More high cloud around today though.

Zounds! That sharp downpour  came out of nowhere, fortunately just at waggy tail-end of the Norman walk.

Humidity shot  up so negating the slight rain cooling…….

Ita been nice to have some rain for a few hours today, though doubt it even really touched the soil with it being so baked

Dry, cloudy and humid yesterday.   No rain.  This morning it’s much fresher, still dry and cloudy with a northerly breeze.   No rain around here on the radar but showers could pop up later according to the MetO.

It was nice to see a few storms that kicked off late afternoon in mid wales yesterday but it stayed bone dry here all day which i expected. Theres probably a greater chance today but im expecting most of the action to be further south and east. Hopefully im wrong would love to see a nice thunderstorm. Feeling alot fresher this morning which is very welcome 18C.

Hmmm, how typical! Not really surprised to see great expectation turned to damp squib yet again. Just 1.7 mm yesterday morning after a couple of hours of light rain and another 1 mm this morning after bouts of drizzle from low cloud. As so often, all the action further south and east. Hopefully Thursday's frontal system might bring more substantial rain. MetO fax chart has occlusion point just off the Lleyn peninsula at 12 Z so there is still hope yet for the NW. Weirdly enough, their text forecast has it still dry but the computer output for Penygroes already goes for heavy rain by lunchtime. Not the first time that man and machine clash - will see who the winner will be this time!

Must have rained overnight.  Definitely cooler this morning and happily grey and overcast.  Think veg garden plants will be glad and resident slugs will be ecstatic.

On the start of the Norman dog walk and it’s looking very like Autumn is a comin in.

I’m of the disposition that seasons start on the cross quarter days, so autumn, for me, started on  or around  4th August.  Meteorologically it is the 1st September, whilst for  some it’s the autumn equinox which signals autumn.  Looking at the pics, I’d say it’s already here.

I’m pretty annoyed about the press coverage of our ‘drought’ here in Pembrokeshire.  Llys Y Fran reservoir was pictured on TV this morning proving that the water levels are indeed low, but claims that we haven’t had any rain since mid July are simply not true.  We’ve had measurable, if not substantial, rain on at least four days in August, including yesterday when it rained all day.  We’ve had hot and sunny conditions for a total of about 14 days this summer but otherwise the weather has been pretty average.  The reservoir in question is fed from the Preseli Hills which may not have enjoyed their usual copious rainfall this year but it’s not been completely dry by any means.  The issue for me is one of insufficient collection, inadequate storage and ageing pipes through which a lot of water is lost to leaks.  That there is a need for some longer periods of rain is obvious, but that’s called ‘Autumn’ and ‘Winter’ around here and it happens every year.  In the meantime the water company needs to have long term plans in place to improve their infrastructure if they are going to overcome the challenges of climate change.

Quite a pleasant late summer day, with about 50/50 cloud and sunshine.  Warm in the sun but a fairly stiff breeze kept temperatures down.  The threat of rain was there in the morning but it never came and so we had a dry day here, in contrast to yesterdays 12 hours of rain.   Some of the trees are beginning to show their Autumn colours already which is probably due to the really exceptional heat we had last week but otherwise  we’re not really suffering from the official ‘drought’ in any visible way.

Carrying on on the subject of autumn. This is quite interesting from etymologyonline.

autumn (n.)

season after summer and before winter, late 14c., autumpne (modern form from 16c.), from Old French autumpne, automne(13c.), from Latin autumnus (also auctumnus, perhaps influenced by auctus "increase"), which is of unknown origin. Perhaps from Etruscan, but Tucker suggests a meaning "drying-up season" and a root in *auq- (which would suggest the form in -c- was the original) and compares archaic English sere-month "August." De Vaan writes, "Although 'summer', 'winter' and 'spring' are inherited IE words in Latin, a foreign origin of autumnus is conceivable, since we cannot reconstruct a PIE word for 'autumn'".

Harvest (n.) was the English name for the season until autumn began to displace it 16c. Astronomically, from the descending equinox to the winter solstice; in Britain, the season is popularly August through October; in U.S., September through November. Compare Italian autunno, Spanish otoño, Portuguese outono, all from the Latin word.

As de Vaan notes, autumn's names across the Indo-European languages leave no evidence that there ever was a common word for it. Many "autumn" words mean "end, end of summer," or "harvest." Compare Greek phthinoporon "waning of summer;" Lithuanian ruduo "autumn," from rudas "reddish," in reference to leaves; Old Irish fogamar, literally "under-winter

Looking at the rain radar for the whole country shows an interesting picture.  The only places in the UK getting persistent rain this morning are the south coast of Cornwall and, yes, Pembrokeshire - that poor drought-stricken county where the use of a hose pipe could bring a hefty fine.  OK, I admit that the rain is light in nature but at least we’re getting some!   Let’s hope some of it ends up in the reservoirs…..
