I could get quite used to the pattern of heavy overnight rain quickly changing to clear skies,  giving rise to gorgeous sunrises followed by dry and bright days as happened again. 22 mm within a few hours helps to catch up with the overall rainfall deficit to date this year. And temperatures also still keeping up reasonably well. I can remember many much more miserable autumns in the past here in Snowdonia.

Yes a beautiful day, if a tad chill am  and sun moves round behind Nantyr Hill by 4pm, the house cools down, so now heating on 1 hour am and 1 hour evening while cooking supper.

A calm, misty and very Autumnal start here today.  Everything is still soaking wet from the rain which fell most of yesterday.  The local stream is filling up and flowing strongly now, but I have heard that the Pembrokeshire reservoir at Llys-y-Fran is still half empty.  I haven’t been up there to take a look but find this odd given how much rain we have had recently.  Might take the rest of the winter to refill it I suppose, but Welsh Water have some explaining to do given that we had a three hour loss of water the other day due to a burst main.  Hardly seems to be a month going by when they don’t have a pipe burst somewhere around here….

Wow, a rare rumble of thunder just occurred, something we have seen very little of in our valley this year. Earlier this morning a short but very potent downpour yielded 9 mm of rain. Certainly extremely changeable today with sunny skies being rapidly replaced by dark threatening looking clouds and showers and back again.

Yes, same here.  Beautiful balmy morning promising many plans, albeit accompanied by a gusty and fresh wind, only to be rained off - a lot!  Definitely chilly out there, misty, dark and wet.

Saw a distant flash of lightning on the horizon last evening on the way home, but couldn’t hear the thunder.  Not surprising there was thunder about given the intensity of some of the showers yesterday but today has started sunny and calm, with hardly any breeze at all.  Later we are to expect rain moving in from the south and winds to strengthen again.  Yes, it’s Autumn proper now!

Yesterday's 'rumblings' were very doubtless the longest lasting for a long time. Numerous times, thunder - combined with showery rain - was audible from late lunchtime to about midnight, as if the god of thunder wanted to make up for this year's shortcomings. All cloud to cloud lightning, mostly not even visible, with the typical rolling sound to follow. Seems that following tonight's rain we can look forward to a couple of fine sunny days Mo/Tue, ideal for tidying the garden up and I'd better protect my lettuce which is still bountiful out there - something else I haven't achieved before. So far, I quite like this autumn with its varied weather conditions, much better than the usual and seemingly never ending dross of low cloud, wind and drizzle/rain.

Sunny, mild, very very windy with some cracking gusts, blowing leaves off trees and empty plant pots around garden.  Good drying day.

Superb clear starlit night here tonight with Jupiter very visible to the south-east.  The Milky Way is also clearly visible with no clouds to obscure the view.  A windy day today, with regular strong gusts but also mainly sunny and no rain.  Tomorrow we might be dry again with less wind.  Fingers crossed, then.

Although the sky overhead is clear, I can see distant lightning on the southern horizon now which must be linked to the string of heavy showers moving north towards Pembrokeshire.   I think they will pass through after midnight and perhaps I might hear some thunder this time!

17.9C max here today is quite respectable for the middle of October, and with blue skies and light winds for most of the day made it ideal for drying my bedding. More of a breeze now, but nowhere near the 40+mph gusts as predicted by the MetO computer output for my area which has even higher gusts of up to 54mph in store for early tomorrow evening before easing again. As the wind direction remains E to ESE throughout, the resulting lee effect may well send some sizeable gusts down from the Snowdon massif, especially near fronts, the first of which should reach us by the end of the night.

After the MetO output having gone 'mental' all day, projecting gust of up to 63mph at one point for my area, I am glad to say it didn't materialize to that extent. Yes, it has been quite wild at times with strong gusts and plant pots rolling round in the drive but nothing out of the ordinary for October. After a couple of showery episodes early in the morning it even remained dry and bright for the rest of the day, so no complains from me.

Extraordinary light show here earlier this evening as the line of intense showers passed through - very active cloud to cloud sheet lightning overhead accompanied by continuous rolling thunder and torrential rain for about ten minutes.  Very unusual for this time of year but spectacular to watch especially as it was after dark and the whole sky was flashing, lighting up the horizon.  Weird weather.

Same here over the last hour and a half but with only a light shower. The lightning has been truly spectacular and the rolling thunder almost continuous. Still rumbling now but lightning gradually fading - wow!!

Superb weather here at the moment - sunny with light clouds, very little wind, 20degC.  Could easily be talking about June or even July but it’s nearly November, for goodness sake!   I can’t help wondering how the winter is going to turn out but an extremely benign season would not be unwelcome given the cost of electricity and heating oil…..

Heavy rain and gusty winds here overnight and 100% overcast this morning although dry at the moment.  Leaves now falling like confetti everywhere and some trees are already almost bare.  Sad to see so many ash trees around here which probably will not put on any leaf next spring due to die-back.   However, the ash in the hedgerows seems largely unaffected so far, so maybe the species will survive long term.   More rain forecast for today, tomorrow and most of next week but still no news of the hose-pipe ban lifting…..

Potentially stormy conditions forming in the Atlantic from early November, according to the GFS this morning.  Might well affect Wales with high winds at some point.  Too early be accurate at this time but worth keeping an eye on - could change completely, or could intensify…….

With those high SST's out in the Atlantik there is still a lot of energy that will sooner or later manifest in high winds heading our way. In a rather unscientific way, just by sheer observation over the years, I found that extremes eventually even out again by going the other way. Hence I get increasingly nervous during a long benign spell, knowing that it will ultimately be followed by never ending gales and downpours while during those miserable periods i take heart that warm sunny spells might not be far off. Weird? Yes, quite likely. And what happened to the North Atlantic hurricane season? Seems to have gone rather quiet again or have I missed something. Luckily, very little fallout from it for the UK in this third consecutive La Nina year.

One can only feel sorry for the poor souls in Australia who consistently seem to draw the short straw, going from deadly wildfires to all inundating flooding and back again to the next firey devastation. Wonder how much their addiction to coal contributes to all this? Time to change tack perhaps?

A few dry periods between frequent heavy showers today - sometimes intense rainfall for several minutes - but no more thunder or lightning here - yet.   Some are forecasting heavy thundery showers for tomorrow so we will see what happens, but remaining pretty mild for late October with absolutely no sign of anything resembling frost yet.

Pictures I took around 8:30AM this morning of some dark looking unstable mid-level clouds before a load of showers came in an hour or so later.

‘Moody’ skies alright!  I love interesting cloud forms.  Here we’ve had heavy rain for about an hour, now easing.  Radar says the skies will clear to sun in about 40 minutes, so we might have a useful day.
