Aaaand not such a good update today. Toned down quite a bit from yesterday.

"Later next week, in the run up to Christmas, there are indications of rain and showers developing more widely. There is also a chance of winds switching to more of a northwesterly direction, allowing conditions to become a little colder, with a risk of some wintry showers developing in the north. However, at this stage there is little sign of any widespread or severe cold and wintry weather."

Never bought into the hype anyway. Northwesterly slush or cold rain is what we get in these set ups. Todays update will be closer to what we get. Not the blizzards mentioned in the mod thread

Yes I think that's a fair summary.

I think they are seeing what most are seeing in the run up to Christmas. It’s beyond this that has my interest.

Monday 18 Dec - Wednesday 27 Dec

Through most of next week conditions will be mild and breezy. Whilst some rain is possible at times, for many central and southern parts of the UK, there will be a good deal of dry and bright weather. More unsettled further north and west with spells of rain more frequent and probably heavy at times. Later next week, in the run up to Christmas, there are indications of rain and showers developing more widely. There is also a chance of winds switching to more of a northwesterly direction, allowing conditions to become a little colder, with a risk of some wintry showers developing in the north. However, at this stage there is little sign of any widespread or severe cold and wintry weather.

Thursday 28 Dec - Thursday 11 Jan

Most likely continuing unsettled with bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely in the north and northwest. Short-lived colder spells remain possible, with hazards such as snow and ice, particularly in the north. The chance of these colder spells increases moving into January, with a low likelihood of a more prolonged spell of cold weather developing around mid-month.

The tone for late this month now being pushed on to mid next month, with a 'low chance' of something other than a northerly toppler.

Tuesday 19 Dec - Thursday 28 Dec

Initially mild, wet and windy in southern areas before clearing away leaving conditions unsettled with showers of rain across western coasts and some hill snow affecting north-western areas, clearer to the east. Late in the week potential for a mild spell in the south as rain moves in with some small amounts of hill snow in the north before a period of more north or north-westerly winds with showers across coasts and turning wintry over hills. but clearer in the south, this likely recurring through the period with milder and wetter westerly periods interspersed with a risk of with colder north-westerly or northerly conditions and showers, some wintry over hills, for a time. However, at this stage there is little sign of any widespread or severe cold and wintry weather.

Friday 29 Dec - Friday 12 Jan

Most likely continuing unsettled with bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely in the north and northwest. The low likelihood- if it’s to happen I wonder where a block might set up? My guess is ne. We will see and I will looking in the outer reaches of the out put for suggestions this might be the case. All very interesting.

Wednesday 20 Dec - Friday 29 Dec

Broadly mild with some brighter spells in the southeast and wet and windy conditions in the northwest. Windier conditions spread south by end of the week followed by potential for blustery showers in the northwest, whilst clearer spells into the southeast. By the weekend a return to wet and windy conditions with intermittent showery periods from the northwest, most rain over northwest areas, though small amounts of transient sleet or hill snow possible on the leading edge of bands of rain. This likely recurring through the period with milder and wetter westerly periods interspersed with a risk of with colder north-westerly or northerly conditions and showers, some wintry over hills. However, at this stage there is little sign of any widespread or severe cold and wintry weather.

Saturday 30 Dec - Saturday 13 Jan

Most likely continuing unsettled with bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely in the north and northwest. Thursday 21 Dec - Saturday 30 Dec

At the start of this period, a milder and more mobile Atlantic pattern is expected to quickly become established, bringing rainfall, especially for the north and northwest. In addition, a period of strong, potentially disruptive, winds is likely for at least central and northern parts of the country. Into the Christmas period, there is an increased chance of a colder interlude with northerly winds bringing some snowfall and ice, especially for the north. However, this colder interlude could be very short-lived, and may not reach the far south before a milder Atlantic westerly flow potentially becomes re-established. A mobile Atlantic pattern becomes more probable towards New Year's Eve, with the majority of cloud and rain likely across the west, and drier and brighter conditions more probable in the east.

Sunday 31 Dec - Sunday 14 Jan

Most likely continuing unsettled with bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely in the north and west. Short-lived colder spells remain possible, with hazards such as snow and ice, particularly in the north. The chance of these colder spells slightly increases moving through January, with a low likelihood of a more prolonged spell of cold weather developing around mid-month.

As discussed on Breakfast this morning  the METO seem quit confident of some kind of Battle ground over Christmas, showed a graphic for Christmas Day with a boundary between the cold air and milder air,but obviously stated the uncertainty at the moment and the boundary could move further North or Further south.

Friday 22 Dec - Sunday 31 Dec

Unsettled with milder, mobile spells of wind and rain, and briefer colder interludes most likely. Initially, for the north, showers, heavy in places and wintry to low levels, with drier and brighter conditions further south. Lingering strong winds should ease early in the period. Milder conditions, likely returning for a time over the weekend. By the Christmas period, a chance of a colder, showery interlude with northerly winds potentially bringing some snowfall, mainly across hills in the north. However, this colder interlude could be short-lived, and may not reach the far south before a milder Atlantic, westerly flow, becomes re-established. This pattern most probable towards New Year's Eve, with the majority of cloud and rain likely across the west, and drier and brighter conditions more probable in the east.

Monday 1 Jan - Monday 15 Jan

Most likely continuing unsettled with bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely in the north and west. Short-lived colder spells remain possible, with hazards such as snow and ice, particularly in the north. The chance of these colder spells slightly increases moving through January, with a low likelihood of a more prolonged spell of cold weather developing around mid-month.

Saturday 23 Dec - Monday 1 Jan

On Saturday, a band of rain sinks erratically south, perhaps wintry over hills. To the north, a colder showery airmass, these wintry in places, mainly over high ground, and milder conditions further south. The Christmas period is most likely to start with a colder, showery, northerly airflow in situ across much of the country, perhaps with the exception of the far south, bringing some snowfall, mainly across hills in the north. This interlude likely to be short-lived, before a milder, westerly flow returns, which may lead to a risk of some transient snow to lower levels for a time. A continuation of this pattern most probable towards New Year's Eve, with the majority of cloud and rain likely across the west, and drier, brighter conditions more probable in the east.

Tuesday 2 Jan - Tuesday 16 Jan

Most likely continuing unsettled with bands of rain crossing the UK with brighter conditions and showers in between. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely in the north and west. Short-lived colder spells remain possible, with hazards such as snow and ice, particularly in the north. The chance of these colder spells slightly increases moving through January, with a low likelihood of a more prolonged spell of cold weather developing around mid-month.

Despite the gloom about cold prospects over christmas from some, the met outlook still sticking with a degree of opportunity for cold in January, albeit low, but it says 'slightly increases', let's see whether it keeps the theme or drops it.. the chance of colder weather late Dec it mentioned in earlier outlooks was quickly erased, but I expect Jan to offer greater chance.
