Looking at the models today I'd probably keep the temperature but sadly revise the rainfall upwards.

However I'll resist the temptation because the models might (hopefully!) be showing something entirely different in a few days.

Yeah I remember it. Was 19 at the time and witnessing days of cold cloudy weather for what seemed like an eternity.

May days in the low 10s, even during the second half of May.

Robert Miles’ Children was the soundtrack around that time. I always associate that song with the cold spring and horrible May.

Strangely they did 1996 on Radio 2 yesterday as the later year on POTP.

I was a few years older, in my 20s. I don't really have bad weather memories of that May, and the songs are more associated in my mind with chilly, but bright and pleasant weather. The bad weather was restricted to the period 18th-29th.

The first half in particular, while cold for the time of year, was bright and dry. Have certainly known far worse Mays in the past 40 years or so.

Remember the garden looking bare even in mid May. The first half was distinctly chilly with northeast winds, mid month was miserable, cold and wet. It improved markedly by months end heralding a hot start to June. Summer 96 was a decent one, by no means particularly hot, but often sunny and dry and warm with some rain at times.

Good old Gambo.

I tend to switch off if it’s years after 1995, for some reason I lose interest in the retro countdowns from 1996 onwards.

12.5°C and 65mm please.

With how spring has been so far for the most part, I'd expect May will continue to have fairly monotonous conditions.

Showers and at times longer spells of rain probably seen, though not an Atlantic onslaught, and temperatures holding on around average, with the odd warm blip or 2.
