In reverse order, I'd have to go with the following:

March 09th - end of April 2023

Dec 18th 2022 - Jan 16th 2023

April & May 2021

July & October 2020

21st September 2019 - March 21st 2020

June 2019

19th March - 17th April 2018

April & June 2016

November & December 2015

May & July 2015

August 2014

Winter 2013-2014

Spring 2013 (had I been living in the UK)

18th December 2012 - 12th January 2013 (I was home for a chunk of that time)

2012 from April onwards minus a few short periods e.g. August and early September

Summer 2011

February 2011

August 2010

July 2009

January, August & September 2008

May & June 20th - July 29th 2007

Winter 2006-2007

October 2004

May 2003

Most of 2002 but especially Jan 15th - March 21st / May-mid July / mid-October to early December

Earlier than that my memory is hazier.

Definitely one of my least favourites. But after a humid and miserable first two weeks we had a really nice period of about a week midmonth with some settled weather turning warm - around the 20th we had some days of clear blue skies and 22c which was lovely. Attempted to become more autumnal in the last few days but bounced back to give us a lovely sunny first half of October. Not a great month but miles better than 2017, or even 2012/2013.

Perhaps Sep 2022 seemed worse than it was after the summer.

It was somewhat below par but not terrible. The wet start and drier period a bit later on was unusual for September.

Thankfully truly dire Septembers seem to be rather rare - perhaps 2017 has been the only one of the 21st century so far. There are far more cool, dull, wet Julys than Septembers it seems.

Last September wasn’t THAT bad really, it was just unusual that the wet weather was warm and the dry weather mostly cool.

2019, 2017 and those of the 2010-13 era were all worse Septembers than last year here.

September 1968 - the month of the Surrey floods which I shall never forget, and that after an awful summer in that area.

July / August 1985 - 'a poor summer' (Eden), something with which I totally agree

This century - I totally agree with the comments about Autumn 2000

August 2002 - floods on the N Yorkshire moors.

September 2019 in my area was actually proper decent! Except for the wet final 3rd. It featured a run of 9 out of 10 days in a row from the 12th to the 21st with pretty much unbroken sunshine.

It had its moments for sure, mainly the middle third. The first third was not good though, and as you say the final third was characteristically wet!

True. I found 2002 and 2004 worse though as they were wet, which accentuated the chillyness.

Post 2010 bogeyman years

Overall year 2015

Not too bad winter to open up the year with a little snow late Jan, early Feb, the only real "highlight" of the year

Spring was non descript

Summer was poor overall with a 1 day heat spike the only highlight really and the single overnight thunder event 2 days later.

Autumn was chilly at times but nothing special

Horror show December

Bogeyman year by months

January 2020 - (2014 also a contender too) I picked January 2020 as it was a zonal washout and 2014 was a contender but the little bit of wet snow on 30th January 2014 saved this one from my bogeyman month pick.

February 2020 - Hands down the worst one of all. The wettest February I can remember in my entire life, a mild zonal fest. Even the very brief wet snow on the 27th couldn't save this month from the bogeyman selection.

March 2022 - A poor month overall with wet weather dominating. Could have picked 2023 here but for me 2022 was worse as the snow event in 2022 was less good than the 2023 one.

April 2012 - Hand down April 2012 gets the bogeyman label here, a total washout and a month to forget.

May 2021 - A cool and miserable month overall, even the brief shot of heat at the end doesn't save this month from the bogeyman label.

June 2012 - A poor June overall and a wet one too, hope never to be repeated again.

July 2015 - (2023 looking to be a possible contender too at the current rate, 2020 was also another here) July 2015 for me was a poor month overall and wet. Even the 1 day heat spike and the thunder on the night of the 3rd couldn't save this month.

August 2017 - Probably the worst of the Augusts between 2010 and 2022 although there are many poor Augusts to choose from (2014 the nearest contender to this one).

September 2015 - A cool September which after a poor summer made sure this month qualified as the bogeyman month of my bogeyman year post 2010.

October 2019 - A washout month and the first of a string of washout months that saw in winter 2019/20.

November 2015 - A mild horror show month but not as horrifically mild as the one that follows it.

December 2015 - December 2015 sticks out like a sore thumb here as a bogeyman month. The mildest December on record by a clear mile. Hope to never see anything like it again.

If we ever got a year with the above months as a selection, what a horror show year it would be.

I think September 2001 was worse than all of those. It barely averaged 18c here.

Well yes there are plenty of other poor Septembers before the dates I mentioned. I guess the only saving grace in the west was that 2001 wasn't wet, but it was dull and cool. 2000 was much worse, however, albeit with more interesting weather.

June 1991 was probably the worst since 1972 in the terms of just being cold, wet and miserable.

Surprised to see you put March 2022- It was a fab month in my area with 10 days in a row of unbroken clear skies! Not so good in your area?

Think the best weather was in the south in March 2022. Unsettled further north with the short Arctic snap the only real highlight of the month.

July 2023 could well end up an Apr 12.. a very poor month on the back of an exceptionally warm dry month i.e. March 12.. Ive talked about how we often flip from one extreme to another dry/warm to wet/cold - though this July looks average namely due to the very mild SSTs but with little notable warmth, here I doubt we will make 25 degrees at all..

Sep 2000: 20.1c, 106mm, 132 sun hrs

Sep 2001: 18.1c, 60mm, 143 sun hrs

2 dull and wet months, but Sep 2001's temperature was truly awful whereas 2000 was average.

Those are tropical figures compared to here in the Pennines

September 2000 average temp 13.8 deg,140mm rain,96 hours sun

September 2001 12.8 deg,80mm rain,79 hours sun

September 1986 Average 11.05 deg,yes,11.05 deg, 7mm rain,167 hours sun

I would think his figures are average max for the month, not the average as a whole.

Correct, the mean temps those months..

Sep 2000: 16.3c

Sep 2001: 14.5c

An easy choice. September 2001 was a cold, wet and dull mess.

Bear in mind its standard procedure to use the 1961-1990 average for the 1991-2000 period and 1971-2000 average for 2001-2010.

September 2000: 16.3C (+1.3C), 106mm (210%), 132hrs (91%)

September 2001: 14.5C (-0.7C), 60mm (110%), 143hrs (98%)

Both still not great though.
