Thunder and lightning over towards Lofthouse (Wakefield/Leeds) and a short torrential downpour. Unusual to get thunder and lightning at this time of year!

Battering it down currently with strong wind gusts and sideways rain, proper grim...

Brilliant little storm about 45 mins ago  had hail stones whitewash lighting and some good rumbles better than we get in summer 😂

Yes same here just now,  a sudden hail storm.
Very lively.  The lights flickered a couple of times.

Was bad timing because little one was scared but managed to grab a few shots towards the back end of the storm ⛈️

Yep, it was short but intense here. Gone as fast as it started. Looking at lightning maps, it appears to have propogated roughly east along the M62, with some strikes over the Lancashire border just over an hour ago, then moving into West Yorkshire, so would make sense that East Yorkshire is next in the firing line, if it doesn't dissipate before then.

That sounds about right I live near the m62 and it was on that track

Absolutely vile day, 5°c and steady rain, which we really don't need, we have enough fields flooded locally already,

Proper squall line about to pass through shortly. I'll be watching and listening 😎🌧️

148mm rain this month now -if I manage another 2mm later today it will be the wettest month of the year.

January looks to be turning colder, and thus drier. Having been on here for nearly 20 years I have learnt not to get hung up on the model dramas! A UK high followed by retrogression is a perfectly feasible outcome. I'd expect more runs like the GFS 6z outreaches as the strat warming begins to impact lower down. Always good to get snow in the darker months, though as March this year showed snow can stick around a few days even late on. A long way to go before then though!

3 months above 100mm this year here, when we normally don't get any. The past few months is what living in Cumbria must feel li,e.

Big change confirmed by Louise L this evening, with a large area of high pressure taking the place of the succession of low pressure systems by next weekend. That was the good news, the bad news is that the high pressure system will bring in bitingly cold Easterly winds from the Continent. I'm glad I'm tucked up in Cheshire rather than on the North Yorkshire coast and moors, but I'm sure you hardy NEs will cope. A Happy New Year to you all.

Yep, awful past few months (bar the snow!)

Year in summary

4 x month over 100mm and a yearly total of 956.4mm

  • December - 150.2mm
  • July  -150.2mm
  • October - 144.6mm
  • November - 101.2m

Highest temp - 29.2c (June) - Weather station didn't record on the warmest September day (my fault for ignoring battery warning!), but presuming 30c not reached going by the nearest Meto station.

Lowest temp - 5.2c (December, though January got to -5.1).

Snow - March - 15cm and December 5cm (don't recall any snow in Jan or Feb - if there was it was a dusting!)

Happy new year all - fingers crossed for some wintry weather in January or February followed by a warm spring and summer..

Happy, Healthy New Year my local weather pals  😊
It's a rare beautiful clear, sunny day here today.

Just enjoyed a quick walk round the block.
Nearly got run over by white van man .. he wound down his window
and said with a smile .. 'well that was nearly a very short year for you'  LoL
Phew.

BL  😊
