I'm pretty sure something big is on the way in terms of cold for our region and the UK in general, could someone tell me if a big freeze sometimes follows flooding events, I seem to remember past big freezes occurred after a long spell of wet and stormy weather where flooding occurred?

47 came after a very mild period. 62/63 came after a mild a stormy period. Have not read up on any other severe winters

Think we have all learnt in the past not to get to sucked into the model output thread and endless Narnia posts, I do hope we get some good cold weather and in these set ups us on the North East cost tend to do very well.

Thats if it don't all go Pete tong which history tells you it more then likely will.

Once Met office start to tell us I will get excited, then disappointed when I see the southerly wind symbol over my house 🤣

Lovely...more rain!! At least it's cold rain instead of warm.

Just come back from playing football, it was like someone switched on the freezer half way though. 🥶

I was playing golf up in Northumberland earlier and driving back it started to rain as we approached Newcastle. The rain did become quite sleety in the heavier showers.

To be fair I was expecting it to be mainly dry today.

Hoping this will be a sign to come, get the cold in and we just never know do we. Still don’t think we will get much, would love to be proved wrong though.

I don’t think we will see anything this week, possibly the hills might, but next week is supposed to be when the proper cold comes. I am not going to get too excited yet, if by Weds evening the cold charts are still showing then I will.

Good to see..Most lakeland fell tops are free of snow, mind the frost looks like snow.. suspect eastern fells might have a dusting.

Hoping this time next week I can look onto a snowy eastern face of the Coniston - Crinkle Crags - Scafells - Langdales ranges.

Unstable arctic airstream, NE should do very well on paper..

Latest Met office longer range is suggesting possibly a more NE flow as time goes on during the potentially long, upcoming cold spell.

In my experience this is the best direction for snow, 'lake effect' heavy snow showers coming in off the North Sea, beats frontal 'events' hands down.

Snow tyres fitted to car and it's all eyes on Monday onwards.

Totally agree, we always do better with NE or E and, as you mention, the white gold looks like it might very soon be within reach.

So as we edge closer to the cold what are people’s thoughts for this area,

I think the favoured spots North York Moors will do well from the northerly, people inland like myself I feel will be a fustrating time.

We might also have to sit back and watch the south get buried in snow as I doubt the front will get this far North, it’s a catch 22, we either want to stay in the colder air or get loads of snow.

Either way it beats the relentless rain. Bring on hopefully lots of snow for us Northeasterners. ⛄️

I think the flow will just be a wrong for us this time and we'll stay mainly dry and frosty. Would actually suit me tbh as it's a welcome break from the damp squib that the 2nd half of last year was. Signals look to be pointing towards Scandinavian height rises towards the end of Jan and into February so I think we may have to ride it out until then
