one of the few years to have a cold winter and warm summer (see also: 1947 and 2013, and just about nothing else).

Perhaps 2018 was not far off? Although the winter itself wasn't cold, there was enough of that cold that to me the year felt the most continental out of any in recent years, with then a very May and warm summer following.

Even deserts struggle to reach 50 degrees, that's synoptically impossible on an island this far north. 40c was a push at the upper limit of what was possible in the most extreme setup.

Well, it's almost certainly happened before, way back when hippos wandered in what is now London and palm trees were thriving on Greenland.

@raz.org.rain I for one am glad, good combination this - dry and mild. It means I can fish on the river without freezing my head off and also can actually be able to fish due to the river not being in an "amazon" like state (bank bursting).

but keeping an eye on significant rain event on Monday, not mentioned on here at all, doubt it will be named that's why, the named storms sometimes just a fart in the wind! it's the ones that are not mentioned can be worse

When on 27th Jan you have a 50 minute delay between one post and the next on model output discussion you know something is seriously wrong 😢😢

How I miss the 1990s proper snow

Wonderfully mild and sunny day in London. Perfect for a day out. Don't know what people are moaning about...

Comes to something when we're likely to get a covering of Saharan dust in the next couple of days ,rather than a covering of snow in January ......😂😃😄😆

Its been a good January here. Id give it an 8/10 depending on how much sunshine I get in the next few days (p.s Its going to probably rank close with the exceptional last 2 Januarys)

Good for you in the north west, here I'd be lucky to get a dusting with that! Very shortlived snap anyways and at the bottom of ensemble pack so I'm not too bothered.

The GFS is everyone's favourite model again😂 I will be having a BBQ if it hits 16c on Monday, the first of the summer.

Always feel January avg temps are a lot warmer in last few days, than the first few days, first few days have still dark/winter feel

last few days feel more Spring, or at least Spring on the way

It is winter, just not as cold as some wish it to be.

ECM is poor for any sustained cold next 10 days.

This certainly can't be classed as winter for most, yes some winter weather but for the majority nothing, bear in mind i live in the pennies and travel daily across them.

@Metwatch 2010 was pretty close, especially in the SE with July being quite warm.

It's been a nice day here - plenty of sunshine and a high of 9.2C. No complaints from me. I would happily take this weather all winter tbh. My preference in winter will always be cold and snowy but mild and sunny is a pretty close second.

Aye, snow my favourite, then dry and mild, especially as when it's cold like from 14th to 19th Jan, I always seem to get a cold, but not when it's mild

cold/frosty without snow isn't that enjoyable as risk of catching a cold is much higher
