It was sleeting before, as is all looked like ice pellets, bow it's heavy snow :yahoo:

Glad you're getting it too Stephen!

Things may get marginal later on the coast as the westerly picks up but there's certainly loads of precipitation around!

It's a moderate rate of snowfall here, the rain washed it all away last night so this is a delightful surprise. The hens and one of the cats are unimpressed, but the other one went ballistic! My lovely boy is out making snow sculptures - it's the decent building stuff here. :yahoo:

here's hoping it sticks for a few days!

not been online since yesterday afternoon so out of touch! Did it rain in some areas last night then? We had heavy snow so I assumed everyone did.

Can someone with more technical knowledge than me explain why it is staying as snow when the temp is above freezing , yet yesterday it turned to sleet/rain,i presume it's to do with dew points..is it likely to turn sleety later, because the BBC seem to be forecasting snow not sleet/rain

My friend is flying to his family in Italy at 4pm today but by the look of things he can expect disruption!

I've noticed that the heaviest snow showers are preceded by a short spell of hail - very impressive!

Crazy snowfall now!

Hi , The freezing level is lower and the convective cells that produce the snow showers produce a downdraft of cold air. Although the temperature atlowest layers may have been warmed by the sun it will not stop the snow from melting. Yesterday evening had a layer of warmer air embedded in the flow that produced the rain and sleet. Today you are in the unstable cold sector.Hope this helps a little.
