Very true, and yes your right about the snow aswell just plain ignorance. I saw a kid down my road last winter when it was at it's peak in terms of coldness going down the road on a skateboard in what was probably about -6 in just a t-shirt and shorts, no surprise to hear that the next day he was rushed to hospital and was seriously ill with hyperthemia and only just survived, what a plonker!!!! :-/

lol ,he saw the sun was out and thought ah nice n warm today...

Why would we blame Global Warming?

i suppose Global Warming caused the 1703 windstorm?

you can blame almost anything on global warming pmpl.

I agree with you there, American forecasters put out weather watches about a week in advance even if their low on confidence look what happened with Irene they hyped it up as a once in a generation storm just cause it was heading for New York and by the time it got there it was barely a hurricane at all, but I would rather they just assumed the worst case scenario then flippantly hope for the best!

Please dont forget the MASSIVE flooding and loss of life with Irene though.. The winds werent of much note, but the flooding she caused was absolutely unreal in the mid-Atlantic states and New England. Over 40 people died from it. So Irene did impact the regions SEVERELY just not with wind paticularly. Check the floods out!! help.gif

Yes north and south Carolina got abit slammed by the winds and had alot of flooding true but in NYC it was just a few roads near the river mouth that had some flooding over then that the centre of the city was relatively unscathed.

NYC was really lucky, deffo! But the worst of the storm went more inland into Vermont and upstate NY and New Jersey. The coasts of North and South Carolina got hit bad, but its the inland states that usually dont get it so much that really suffered with the flooding. I just meant to say that I dont think Irene was "over-hyped" I think the flooding and intense weather they predicted was spot on, just the wrong area. They evacuated NYC cuz its dead low and on barrier islands. But the devastation was more NW is all. wink.png

Yes.......but it is a useful reality check.

This can downgrade just as much as it can upgrade.

I hope this is just a glitch lol ;) Come on Katia liven up!

Local ITV weather forecast just indicated steady windspeed of 35mph for Monday in the London region, if that's correct then it's going to get pretty nasty even here with 60mph+ gusts I would think!

I cannot see that at the moment unless it was to track much further south.

Around the coasts it could get gusty, but inland and given the built up nature of the London area it would be rare to achieve a gust of 60mph+

1987 yes, but getting such gusts in London would be difficult.

I would have thought built up environments would increase wind speed. It certainly did in Leeds in March, a skyscraper created a fierce wind tunnel unfortunately resulting in a life lost.

Even the forecast for Skye and Stornoway et al is rather unimpressive so I wouldn't take them too seriously.. Met Office not really taking any note of this for some odd reason.

Exactly, what nonesense 1987 wasnt just 60mph try 100mph+ for that. 60mph is quite rare inland yes but not unheard of, it's something you'd expect a couple of times every 3 years or so, last time we had 60mph winds in London was only a couple of years back in November 09 so it's nothing we arn't used too!

:winky: I think they probably are, I guess they are keeping their powder dry until Saturday as the track starts to become more certain.

I would rather you did not quote my posts as nonsense.

I did not say that 1987 only produced a 60mph gust.

All I asked was for some evidence of such high gusts being recorded, from a London based weather station for example in other more recent events.
