10 inches lying snow :-)

I wonder how much you had in 2010 when I had 28cm? School Aycliffe and Woodham/Ropemoor had noticeably more then, as they have now, as they have always.

Also, it's up to 4º, the breeze feels noticeably warmer and it's thawing quite quickly.

This cold spell is like a two week summer holiday abroad.

When it's over (snow/holiday) you just want to get it over with quickly (thaw/journey home).

The thaw has now well and truly set in, drip dripping can be heard as the snow and ice gradually disappear.

Here's hoping T144 brings us our next cold spell with more convection next time around please!

I'm actually looking forward to some wet and windy weather, I just hope flooding doesn't become a severe issue.

Well the thaw is well and truly underway. Not sure on totals, but in terms of actual snow fallen, I think this area must have recieved something in the region of 70-80cm in total. Fluvial flooding could become a real issue over tonight as the DPs rise rapidly, there is a lot of water locked up in the hills at present, and the soil surfaces being frozen will result in some fast run offs. Not as dramatic in terms of cold as some previous years, but I cant remember another spell in recent history where we have had two falls of around 30cm (1 foot) in the space of 6 days, plus other smaller falls between. You always know its been a good 'un if the Council have to use JCBs to get the roads open....

In my book the Nov/Dec 10 cold spell could only be a 10, lots of snow and ice days and lasting around two weeks. Don't know really what you expect considering where we live, we don't live in Quebec for example.

Like I've said elsewhere I think we were spoilt in a way by the winter of 09/10 and Nov/Dec 10. Bear in mind that the CET of Dec 2010 was the coldest in the last 100 years which just goes to show that conditions like that are the exception.

I'd rate this cold spell a 7.5/10. Plenty of snow lasting nearly two weeks, it could have been colder and the rain/sleet events were disappointing but overall probably the third best cold spell in the last ten years IMBY.

Still quite a bit of snow and ice out there despite most of the day being clear blue sunny skies and temps rising to around 4 or so degrees, I think and hope the rain will be patchy on this side of the pennines to minimise the flooding risk but tonight is a huge test for the remaining snow/ice cover, still think we may have some ice cover in particular by morningand I imagine there still be some snow on the grass but we shall see.

I must admit, I enjoyed throughly walking through the dry snow with the clear blue skies and near wall to wall sunshine, apart from the temperature it looked like the arctic out there.

Light rain here now and temps around 4c.

Still a lot of snow to melt and already there is a lot of surface water on some of the roads.

Quite a bit of snow left at Consett today but I wouldn't say there's much more than the major towns and cities got in 2010. It's starting to melt properly here with rain, and we've just had a pretty big avalanche from the roof.

It reminds me how lucky we are to live here - that was north of Stanhope, towards Blanchland, though the road was blocked off. Another couple:

Great pics, especially like the top one. Very wintry and bleak looking.

I think we are lucky here in the North East. No matter where you live in the NE, you're not too far away from fabulous countryside, a good size conurbation or a smashing coastline.

Weatherwise we're also fortunate, the main wintry synoptics of Northerly, North Easterly or Easterly orientated weather favours us to varying degrees but all three bringing wintry potential.

The good old North East!

Ah the familiar sound of a southerly gale wink.png Had a lovely sunny day here, not a bad way to start the milder period of weather upcoming. Snow is melting rather slowly but noticeably, looking forward to not being cold all the time -at least for a little while-, as we get closer to February, I can say i've enjoyed this January, not been the best cold spell ever, but still enjoyable :) And now we all wonder what February could bring

Air temp 5.7c

Dew point 0.8c

Wind chill is making it feel like 3.3°C

The ice and snow is slowly dissipating.

The green of grass is now becoming more noticeable.

The breeze is keen.

Temperature up to the dizzy heights of 5c.

Farewell cold, hello mild(er).

What shall February bring?
