Lot of locals here still burn wood and coal and you can smell it when out on a cold night that is for sure.

SNOW DEPTH CUP

Just for Yamkins benefit then, here is a full, updated list of entrants, plus rules and regulations. (Sorry Ali, for the last time in this thread, honest!).

Although today was the official start date for the competition, any member that hasnt entered yet, still has a few days yet to enter but please could you get any late entry in before snow starts falling in the region.

Once again, below are the rules and format we will be using for the competition:

During the first part of Winter, probably up to the end of January, entrants will be asked to measure the depth of their snowfall after each snow event, measurements should be in centimetres and at a time designated by myself and Chris Mantle, with a view to being as fair as possible to entrants throughout the region. Those members who have entered in the North Thames region should log their depths with Chris and those in the South Thames region, log their depths with me.
Each entrants individual snowfall depths will be added together to give a final accumulated figure. The 2 members with the deepest accumulated depth by the end of January, in each of the 8 groups (although we may have to be flexible with the cut-off date, depending on how much snow we have), will progress into a further group format, explained below, for the remainder of the Winter and possibly extending into March, again depending on how much snow we've had.
The winners of those 2 groups will then meet in a Grand Final, to decide the overall winner of the South East Region.

See format below:

North Thames region comprising of Groups 1,2,3 & 4, split alphabetically.

South Thames region comprising of Groups 1,2,3 & 4 split alphabetically.

Top 2 from each group going forward to form 2 Groups of 8, as follows:

Group A: N.Thames. Gr.1 1st & 2nd, Gr.2 1st & 2nd. S.Thames Gr.3 1st & 2nd, Gr.4 1st & 2nd.

Group B: S.Thames. Gr.1 1st & 2nd, Gr.2 1st & 2nd. N.Thames Gr.3 1st & 2nd, Gr.4 1st & 2nd.

Grand Final : Winner Group A v. Winner Group B.

Had a look at the models periodically throughout the weekend - absolutely nothing is set in stone. The models have been flipping back and forth, no one can say with any modicum of confidence what is going to happen in 100+ hours time.

If I had to make a prediction, I'd say there is a low chance of wintry showers for the Home Counties.

Blimey Tom that's a lot of work you Chris have done! And to think it started off as an informal bit of fun last year.

Thanks for all your efforts.

Evening folks

Just watching Britain and the Sea on BBC 1 HD, filmed around one of my favourite places in the world, the west coast of Scotland.  It truly is stunning, especially so when it's neither foggy nor raining!  Got the urge to head up, get into the hills and await the Arctic blast - spindrift in the face, lovely!

Thanks Jax and Lauren.

The Excel workbooks have been put together for each area and seem to be working OK so all we need is the snow although i am not sure if I am ready for my pm box to go through the roofPosted Image

Once the competition starts there will be a link to the latest results for each area which will be updated after each event.

I think the cold is pretty much nailed on, how long it will last, and if it'll bring any snow is the question...... Next weekend is still (tragically) a long way off....

I will be cranking up the electric blanket and sipping mulled wine from Wednesday onwards as a precaution.

Also, TeamMum pointed our that we had snow on the 5th Dec last year, think it was an unexpected transient event....we had about 4cm in the early hours.

Hands up who doesn't want to go to work tomorrow........

Many thanks too, for the above comments. Yes Lauren, although it was a bit of a hit and miss affair, keeping everyones depths on bits of paper.

But thanks to Chris's super-duper spreadsheets, should be a piece of cake this Winter, no pressure then Chris.Posted Image
