can i join you? well what i mean is can i have a duvet day too :winky:

I think mr P might have something to say about that :winky: Anyway we've decided to have a bit if a lay in and then go shopping - we have some gift vouchers from Chrimbo to spend and need a few holiday bits ! I also saw the photos of the snow in Cornwall and a very good explanation for it ...."It is due to latent heat of evaporation being taken from the surrounding air. works well when the rain falls through dry air, cooling it so that snow can penetrate to lower levels" I've also seen a thunderstorm watch issued for tomorrow .......post-10773-0-40446600-1388870670_thumb.j"A strong extra-tropical depression will approach Western parts of Scotland, England & Wales on Sunday. There is the risk of strong thunderstorms for N Ireland between 15Z-21Z, the risk extending into much of Scotland and Northern England & Wales from 18Z into Monday Morning. The main convection will be present during the passage of a bent-back occlusion, and within the polar maritime airmass, coupled under a very intense jet-streak. Sufficient windshear combined with a very strong 850mb flow will mean that there is the increasing risk of line convection and possible bowing, this will increase the risk for severe wind gusts, locally damaging. Focus for storms with electrification will be North of the Midlands across Northern England and Scotland including N Ireland, here very low geopotential, much colder air aloft and the presence of strong storm motion will give a higher risk of lightning. Nevertheless, there remains a distinct background signal for a forced line to develop across South West England, into the Midlands and up towards Lincolnshire/Yorkshire. Due to this signal, we've decided to issue a widespread coverage area. There is a threat of locally severe convection with isolated supercells also a possibility. Main threats are severe wind gusts to 60mph, hail, lightning and torrential downpours which could lead to flash flooding." Edited by MKsnowangel

Yellow Warning of Ice for London & South East England :

Kent, Surrey, Hampshire, Southampton, West Sussex, East Sussex, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth, Brighton and Hove & Medway

As skies clear overnight across southern parts of Britain, road surface temperatures are expected to fall below freezing . This will allow some icy stretches to develop on untreated surfaces or where earlier treatment is washed off by showers.

The public should be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions.

Road surface temperatures should begin to rise above freezing in the west late in the night but not until mid-morning in the east.

Issued at:

2041 on Sat 4 Jan 2014

Valid from:

2245 on Sat 4 Jan 2014

Valid to:

0900 on Sun 5 Jan 2014

Light winds and clearing skies are allowing temperatures to fall away overnight. With surfaces wet from seepage from saturated ground, icy stretches are likely to develop on untreated surfaces. As well as this an area of showers, perhaps locally wintry, are moving across southwestern areas and will run along the south coast. These may wash off any treatment that has been put on roads increasing the risk of icy stretches.

Seems strange not hearing the roar of the wind and lashing of the rain at the window, made worse the last 6 days staying right on the coast in Dorset. All's calm in London tonight, for a change!

Evening guys and gals. There now seems to be some possibility of some white stuff falling at the end of the month which will be a nice change. My dog seems to prefer outside at the mo. We have clear skies now such a nice change from earlier today and I don't care it is cold lol

Thankfully, that rain off the East Devon coast looks to stay mostly offshore over the English Channel as it trundles east.

Untreated wet roads liable to turning to ice in rural parts of the SE tonight though, already down to 3 degrees in some spots. Hopefully won't be icy on London's roads in the morning, as I've an early drive to work.

Hi Nick F,

Regarding icy roads, Croydon Council have deployed a fleet of gritters to treat A & B routes. I'm sure other boroughs are following suite
