Heavy sleet now in Edinburgh.

Edit: Now wet snow. There's hope yet :-)

Rather improbably it's also gone from wet sleet to proper snow here. No chance of it settling unless it cools down and the snow keeps on for twelve hours :D

Good stuff, it's getting colder. Each passing squall is bringing the snow line lower on the hills, with fresh white now lying above about 400 metres ASL and there's dry (but not settling) snow now mixed in with the hail and sleet down here in Moffat.

Dew point 0.9c now so any precipitation would be snowable...don't think that's a word!   However temp is up to 3.3c again.   Don't know where I am with this lot! :wallbash:

Shower incoming by the looks of things so will find out shortly I think!

A pretty lively winters day with some impressive hail at half five this morning and thunder and lightning at times in the morning. A brisk wind driving wintry showers with brief sunny intervals. It will be interesting to see what happens after dark - hopefully more frequent and heavy snow showers as temperatures start to drop.

Wow. Just saw a huge lighting bolt across the sky and hit the ground as I looked out the window, so lucky to have seen it and it was much better than any of the summer storms!

Got to say in terms of thunder/lightning not known a day like this in a very long time. A lot better than many of our summer episodes. December can produce the goods sometimes :clapping:

Even if it doesn't snow tonight it's going to be a very icy night. The Tweed is at the top of the bank in Kelso, everywhere is utterly soaked. Temp 2.2ºC and seems to be falling.

3C and apart from the thunder clap at 6:30 today has just been a miserable grey on/off wet day. It was windier yesterday.

Quite glad id not mentioned to the kids that there was any possibility of snow thursday/friday now lol

For anyone worried that this is one shot at anything winteresque for the next while, here are two ECM and GFS 8 to 10 day 500mb Mean charts. One is from today, the other from the 2nd of December.

post-2844-0-26669700-1418227738_thumb.gipost-2844-0-49169100-1418227739_thumb.gi

This pattern has stuck for a while and could present us with more snow and cold shots in the next 10 days or more.

Edit: I suspect once this pattern breaks then we'll see some decent northern blocking which should usher in winter proper. Basing this on others' winter forecasts for SSW event.

2nd Edit: The ultra-observant will have noticed that the two charts are from different runs (00z and 12z), tsk tsk at me :)

Plenty of squally snow showers since about 2.00pm when the temperature fell to   0.5c but still only lying in shaded areas. High ground above 800 feet now very white.

Still 0.5c

Really getting going now, horizontal wet snow. Radar looks very interesting, a stream of incredibly intense precipitation incoming. Hopefully if it keeps up long enough it'll push temperatures down enough for snow to start sticking.

The MO forecast looks interesting for tonight, bit more marginal further south and west but temperatures generally 1-2C and precipitation turning to snow : http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/gfj8p1wmj#?fcTime=1418256000

Awaiting the latest mesoscale models to see how precipitation looks but difficult to see it clearing up anytime soon looking at the radar.

WInd and rain has picked up here again after a calmer couple of hours.

I see what you mean on the radar LS, wondering if that bright red blob just north west of Glasgow is heading down this way now...

It's starting to show up in the models as well now, with the top layer of the strat getting very toasty. This is the culmination of the warming (it gets above 20C at various points before that as well) but this has been a consistent trend with the GFS at least to displace the vortex off the pole and towards the Siberian sector:

post-9298-0-61186200-1418230402_thumb.gi

Starting to impact further down too, although probably not resulting in an SSW until the start of January:

npst30.png

However, even into the trend period pretty far from mild. Very cold up to Saturday, less cold early next week but by midweek the next cold shot looks likely to hit, probably followed by another less cold interlude:

Well that was a fun night! Some quite spectacular thunder and lightning for a time and we ended up being very busy with a Spanish Fishing Vessel in trouble off Westray, Orkney.

It's miserable out there! Cold, damp, raw and breezy with driving sleet. Roll on summer! ;-)

Currently 1.6c here in Crail so temperature is falling.

Feels freezing out in the wind. Some rain blowing about. Glad I'm only popping out to collect youngest child from her nativity and then home. See if we get any snow or not?

2 issues this evening - temp is too high (5c at Edinburgh Airport) and lack of showers. Hopefully both change at some point to give a shot at something.

Still lots of lightning flashing away to the north across the Firth.

Traffic at a standstill on the A96 below us  there must have been a bump, hope not too serious .Traffic being diverted up past us and getting lost  in the heavy snow showers even making it onto the wood roads beside us and having to turn back at the tuning circle. Still 0.5c
