http://www.banburycake.co.uk/news/11752504.Snow_forecast_to_hit_Oxfordshire_on_Thursday_morning/

Heavy snow is set to hit the county on Thursday morning, according to the Met Office.

The latest forecast predicts heavy snowfall in Chipping Norton, Bicester and Banbury between midnight and 9am.

Light snow is also expected in Oxford, Witney, Didcot, Abingdon, Wallingford and Faringdon.

Snow is also predicted in Chipping Norton and Banbury again on Friday morning.

(Not sure if they swallowed a copy of the Daily Express, when this was published though!)

That sounds promising :D not sure where they are getting their info from though. Like you say, I suspect the Daily Express!

Banbury Cake is owned by the Oxford Mail, they keep doing this, with last weeks snow potential and the week before, basically they are going of what the Online forecast shows, on the website, for each location. Very annoying, as we all know these change so often.

Potential for everyone to see a little dusting tommorrow evening, it's showers, so hit and miss, no guarantees - but no downgrades have happened regardless.

PS - Proud to be a saddler tonight.

I am liking the sound of the BBC/Met Office forecast for tonight in the East Midlands:

  • Tonight

Cold and windy with further snow showers and icy stretches forming on untreated surfaces. Significant snow accumulations are likely in places by the end of the night, mainly over hills.

Looking at the models to determine where exactly showers will be is pointless but they do show most, if not all of us, getting some of the white stuff at some point over the next 36 hours. I do not expect any huge amounts (away from the western Peak District) but a few cm's will do me considering the snow possibilities then look to go on into next week.

Could be a case of short term pain for long term gain for those of us in the west midlands the mods seem to make more of the warm sector in our neck of the woods. So sleet looks more likely although good elevation it could be snow still this is also shown now in met and bbc wich has a sleet snow mix for me, looks as though east midlands will do well though and our derbyshire friends. But its a very fluid situation so anything is possible. Long term though charts couldn't be better.

could have another tricky few days at work, due to be in Tideswell, Hathersage, Grindleford, Bradwell, basically all of the villages in the High Peak on Weds pm, and Thursday.

Sadly no trips to Buxton yet ??

love looking at GFS ppn charts (just for fun) they show Buxton with approx. 50mm of ppn (all snow) now that would good if it was true.

even met office site shows Buxton with heavy snow for 24hours.

Tonight and tomorrow seem to have downgraded for

the West Midlands looking at the forecast on bbc this morning.

Very annoying, again.

Never believe a bbc forecast. Quite a few times it's been snowing heavily for hours and they cannot even force themselves to say 'periods of snow', it's always 'snow showers'.

You cannot predict snow with any great accuracy past 12 hours.

There will be quite a bit of snow about with this set up, even for the Midlands, we just have to radar watch.

And remember............DON'T BELIEVE THE BBC!!.

Checking the EURO4 which was excellent last week shows little snow overnight, but a good chance tomorrow morning post sunrise and Friday morning as well.

Can I just reassert yet again that the only Met Office forecast is the written one on their website.   The symbols are simply a visual representation of the latest raw model output, changing with each run - and should always be taken with a truck load of rock salt.  They indicate what the model shows, and nothing more.  However, they can be useful if they do not change, since this indicates increased model confidence that the parameters will be right/wrong for snow in your vicinity.

Also, when you see there is a warning for your county, check the website to see what part of your county is affected and read what the warning actually says.   A warning does not mean snow is expected in your back yard :)

Edit: county, not country!

That second cold front moving in from the NW looks quite intense and reports in the NW England thread of very gusty winds, torrential rain and hail. Although the most intense area looks set to be cross over N England it could turn quite wet and squally within the next couple of hours.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
