Well the low cloud lifted, but alas there was high cloud above that so it is now bright but not sunny.

Cloudy all day, and we have just had some light rain, but appears to have stopped now.

'When cold weather comes many kinds of frogs swim to the bottoms of ponds and lakes where they rest on the bottom or partially burrow into the mud. Frogs have lungs and breathe air through nostrils, so why don't they drown when they stay on a lake's bottom all winter? It's because their  highly specialized skin allows them to absorb oxygen through their skin, and giving off carbon dioxide the same way.

Amphibians overwintering in the bottom of ponds must be deep enough that they will not be frozen into solid ice, plus the water must have an adequate amount of oxygen. Sometimes the oxygen level at the bottom of ponds drops so low that "winter kills" of frogs result.'

I never knew that, it would be interesting if Shotski could tell us how the frogs behaved in the previous 2 winters which have been pretty mild. Patchy frog here at the moment. :cc_confused: 9c

Hi Lassie,

To be honest the last two years hibernating frog started returning to the pond in January to join the 6 or so that had decided to over winter there. In 2010-11 there were dozens of frogs in the deepest part of the pond and they survived the pond being frozen for a couple of months, but I did maintain some small oxygen holes every morning. Considering we had 80 odd clumps of spawn last spring 20 frogs at the bottom is not a massive number (yet).

Driving back from TWells was fun last night. Went from clear to really thick fog repeatedly. Was like driving through a ghost at times.

Chucking it down all morning here. Dogs and I drenched on the walk this morning. Massive puddles and fields bogged.

And to think that the folks in the MOD thread wanted the benign misty weather replaced with this mild wet Atlantic crap.

Clearly they don't have a dog or take part in outdoor activities. Lol

Started off misty, then we had heavy rain on and off before clearing around half 3 this afternoon. Not a good day overall.

The definition of a Atlantic SW airstream = this morning!

Very Mild, damp and grey.

More rain on way today, more rain on way for tomorrow.

High pressure, please come back :(

13.8C at 07.00. Ridiculously mild! How do you know what to do if you're a hedgehog?  :unknw:

Looking wet for our Region for tonight's firework displays, but hopfully the expected daytime rain would have cleared thru for Fri and Saturday parties. Hopefully the "gusty winds" Carol mentioned won't cause any problems with bonfire sparks or wayward rockets! Enjoy! (Although my dogs won't).

Dry here and the sun is even making an effort, not sure it will be dry rain wise in this little corner by tonight though.

Apart from around 5 minutes of sunshine this morning, it has been a grey and wet day.

THE SKY IS PINK!!!! Seriously!

Today has been rainy here. Doesn't take a genius to work that out.

Well I hope the people that wanted to get rid of the euro benign high are happy.

Jesus what a totally foul afternoon and evening.
