Torrential rain again and shotgun thunder with lightning to the south east, south west and north just came over as black as the ace of spades. Have had to put the lights on as it went so dark.

Torrential rain here in Eastbourne for the last half hour...some decent lightning and thunder to boot. About time! Been a while since I last posted something decent.

We had a busy early morning too from 3am-5am with some good lightning and thunder. Surprised at the easterly shift and the lack of storm progress in land this morning.

Really heavy rain here for almost an hour, occasional thunder and as dark as night. Wonderful.

If this continues then localised flooding will be probable. Already the roads are suffering.

Cloud tops must be very high, exceeding 12km perhaps!

To give you an idea how heavy the rain is I have just broken my record on the weather station and recorded a rate of rain 99.6mm/hr. Obviously it was short lived but just goes to show how intense the rain is.

Nick F said it himself that the lightning activity and severe threat as it travels north will wane especially as it gets to the midlands area and as the heaviest rain is still over the channel and does seem to ease a little over land he seems to be correct , the SE is getting it nw and is due to get more of it this evening

Its a very grey, very muggy and very calm morning here in Tadley. Was expecting a lot of rain this morning, but it looks like the low is taking its time moving north!

Many thanks Vorticity!

Rooting around, the Trappes sounding you mention suggests some dry air aloft, though not full-on anticyclonic subsidence (given the origin, not surprising I suppose!). There's also quite a capping inversion at around 950m:

2015081300.07145.skewt.parc.gif

...hence it would take a fair bit of heating to initiate surface based storms this afternoon/evening. As it is, dynamic uplift may do the trick instead for the SE as has been suggested (again, by Vorticity with his very detailed analysis).

Here in the western reaches of the New Forest, it's finally raining good and proper, but though the rain drops are large, they're not falling at much of a rate. to think what could have been... actually, just look at Brighton eastward for that!  :shok:

keep the faith man keep the faith!

I think this batch is a SE event, but depending on developments later, further thundery showers could reach more western areas as rain moves across. Grey and cool here at the moment.

I think LightningMaps is playing up a bit. The strike near guildford I didn't hear, and strikes near watford?

I must admit, I shouldn't complain about missing out this time around (so far at least), as I was afternoon in the midst of a somewhat supercellular storm in mid-July with lightning every 2 seconds or so, albeit mostly inter-cloud.

Those are false strikes, I tend to tell by looking at the radar and how heavy the PPN is in that area to judge if it is false or not..

BUT MORE THUNDER HEARD HERE!!

Yep-I heard that one too :) . Cheers for the lightningMaps advice.

Can't believe how dark it is here! Not much in the way of fireworks though! Thunder heard now!
