4.7 academy rain or whatever it is edging closer by the minute according to the radar, it's drizzly stuff outside. Hanging on to that valiant green pixel just north of us over the Ochils!

Snow is thawing here in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. Heavy rain outside. A thaw is underway. Will the cold and snow return? Can someone tell me if Thursday is the only day that snow is expected this coming week with the exception of tomorrow as the cold is not expected till Monday night?

Standard cauld, pishin rain here.

2.7 C.

Models look no bad the day. Certainly going to see some colder weather in the medium term.

Lots of nice pics posted above.

It did snow last night but the usual Falkirk triangle stopped it getting heavy.

Endless rain! I hope there's some white stuff this week to compensate for this misery!

Surprisingly enough temps have dipped to 1.8 (EDIT: 1.6, EDIT2:1.4) at the rooftop and the surrounding Ochils reflect that with snow cover down to about 400ft.

In the village there's snowflakes mixed in with the rain. I suppose tis the first day of sleet/snow falling of 2016!:drunk-emoji: May it not be the last!

Snowing, trying to settle :-) Looks like higher parts have been hammered.

Aye, it's snowing in the south-western Borders this morning too. 950 temps don't look promising until you look at the height of the 950...sub 200m for large parts :)

image.thumb.gif.c417faca6921891477c4f943

I know you'll be able to read that chart but for anyone else the black lines show the height at which the air pressure is 950hpa in tens of metres and the temp is just the temp at that height. So at under 200m it's just 2C, cold enough for snow if the precip is heavy enough. It rained for many of us yesterday as the 950 temps were higher and the height of the 950 temps was also higher so despite low surface temps all folks got was rain. I probs haven't explained this very well, so maybe someone else like LS or Lorenzo can jump in?? :D

Almost feel like I'm missing out here although I know we're not - there was a short spell of heavy rain last night but all clear again now with a colourful sunrise over the firth. No photos cos I'm not dressed yet!

I looked at the forecast for the week and very low temps are forecast but I think the HC snowshoe snowshield (HCSS(c)) has been activated

Turning increasingly to snow here despite the ppn being much lighter than earlier. Temp is also on the way down from 4c at 7am to around 2c.

Edit: PPN stopped completely for now.

T is 0c and the rain is turning to light snow now. However, the heavy rain killed all our snow cover last night unfortunately.

It was snowing here about 30 mins ago (wetly and lightly but still snow). The kids got very excited for a few minutes until they realised it wasn't settling.

We've got sleety rain with a few snowflakes here, or to be technical, cold pish.

I've had reports of snow at Hawick and Ettrickbridge this morning :)

925 hPa description makes sense Catch, LS is your guy for these, I looked at learning skew T and Tephigrams, but then I thought better of it!

I think what has happened previously is that we have had decent 500-1000 thickness with the snow line firmly in place, decent 850hPa temps and then the lack of the white stuff has been impacted by warm sectors at 925hPa. So snow aloft but the descent through the warm layer turns it to mush.

I like diagrams like this one as it gives a picture of what can change when snow initially falls from the sky..

Hopefully LS can do some mesoscale updates for us this week.

Meanwhile here it is trying it's best to not be drizzle, woke up to slow motion snowfall and now attempting to be sleet.
