I think also for the SE what many forget is from a dry continental SE'ly mixing with the flow from the SW then the frontal stuff can fall when the 850Hpa's are as high as -1 and up to dam thicknesses 537-539.

...just worth keeping in mind when looking at charts and dismissing!

So..My little one as I have said in my status, is going for a walk to the pond tomorrow and I get a note ;-

Please could parents insure children have waterproof coats, hat scarf and gloves as we expect it be cold with light rain.

LIGHT RAIN....

Which, unless I am mistaken (stranger things have happened!:D) adds credence to Nick L's suggestion that -20C might be achieved, somewhere?

I suppose so but I think he was alluding to Highlands..

Exceptionally cold night if there was snow cover in I would expect minima in the region of -10C around Norwich area widely in that part of the world, outside chance of -15C? :D

Very slack continental flow, temperature would plummet!

Notable update on the long range MO Forecast today suggesting the SE will stay cold or below average for the foreseeable. Looks pretty dry but I guess things can pop up at fairly short notice and at least the ground will be getting a lot colder. Will be nice to see some proper frosts.

As far as snow is concerned, I seem to remember the epic spell in Jan 10 was proceeded by a period of quiet cold weather under high pressure so hopefully something similar occurs!

Mostly fine and sunny until the late afternoon here. It did feel chilly outside though there wasn't a frost here to start.

As for the next few days, my thinking about late Thursday and Saturday offering chances for snow for our region still stands if strengthens in potential in my view.

Only becasue we'll have an area of high pressure over the south east the longest with a lot of surface cold - so chilly days, frosty nights and maybe some freezing fog later...today certainly 'felt' colder and was the coldest day of the winter in my location at 6.4c max but that's not far from average for the time of year, which says it all!

Felt chilly today, despite the literal temperature (all relative compared to December's sauna), but now pelting it down.

This isn't the precipitation I ordered. Waiter!

So potential for snow.

Tomorrow

fax24h.gif

We still have that wrap around front pushing across us as the low clears into the north sea.

A good suggestion of quite a lot of precipitation running along this.

Rain/Snowfall EURO4 Th 14.01.2016 18 GMT       Rain/Snowfall EURO4 Fr 15.01.2016 00 GMT

There is the suggestion that the precipitation could turn wintry, especially later on as the 850s drop and we import some drier air. The precipitation clears during the early hours off the east coast.

Friday looks fine and sunny with a cold north westerly flow.

So moving onto Saturday.

A shallow low is modelled to our north east, there is disagreement on this from the models but there are some showery troughs moving south down the east coast which will bring some sleet and snow showers.

The ECM shows a more potent feature.

ECU1-72.GIF?13-0ECU0-72.GIF?13-0

A chance of showers onto coasts and potentially inland if we get some organisation with these showers. A long way off for this though.

The front stalled here and then pivoted around eventually, ended up with 20cm.
