Probably because a lot of time the severe weather doesn't turn up and the warning system isn't consistent enough and too slow to update.

In general I think this is the problem and there is an element of the Met Office being dammed if they do and dammed if they don't where yellow and amber warning are concerned.

I guess tomorrow will tell if they called this one correctly.

Emergency services have responded to a serious incident in Antrim this afternoon, after a tree fell on a car travelling on the Dublin Road in the town.

It is understood that several people were trapped in the car. Crews from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue (NIFRS) have used specialist hydraulic equipment at the scene.

Just a yellow warning in Northern Ireland. Think how many trees will be felled in the red area. Not worth driving.

A sad update

A man has died after his car was hit by a falling tree in Northern Ireland, as meteorological agencies issue warnings for strong winds.

The incident occurred on the Dublin Road in Antrim.

The main thing that bugs me is how they decide a warning is issued. The other is that they are too slow updating so when it's clearly not happening warnings can stay up hours. In this day and age it's not good enough.

They need to sort out their Web page when there's multiple warnings in force overlapping one another. Today it looks like a rainbow puked. How the average person who doesn't often follow the weather is supposed to make sense of that is beyond me and traffic on the site will increase on days like today from those who wouldn't normally visit.

Consider yourself lucky.  We only have a yellow warning for wind where I live with gusts expected to top out around 50mph and I'm pretty anxious, so I can't imagine how worried people in the red warning area might be.

The met were quite accurate with their timing here, strongest winds forecast around 8pm and there has been a noticeable increase since about 7:45, gusts only in the 50 -55 range though.

Monsieur Chez - I had the same thought - presumably refocussing the high wind areas slightly inland and therefore perhaps less damaging?

Is that what our colleagues on the ground are seeing?

Should be peaking in met office reporting stations like Charterhill over the next 90 minutes.

Then working its way down the Northumberland coast, with the worst to Newcastle by midnight. Might be down to 75-80mph max by that time.

Yep he’s another great one. Schafernaker is decent too in all fairness. But we seem to have seen the end of an era of the old school, knowledgeable and technical weather forecasters. Gavin Partridge, Staplehurst (Dan Holley), Michael fish, Nick F and Jo farrows forecasts on here are far more informative than most public TV forecasts these days.

You are right , living in Ireland and having BBC was a wonder for me as a child with weather forecasting and in hindsight making a mockery of our own forecasters was very wrong ,it was just you giys came across as very entertaining especially Dan Corbett but for me I couldnt wait to see Bill Giles

I'm just outside Durham at the moment and there's been sleet on and off the last few hours, leaving a slushy covering on some cars and paths. Loads of surface water about too.

Probably the worst wind I have ever seen/heard.  Schools closed early this afternoon and it was almost like a flick of a switch around 3pm.  Power went out for a couple of hours at 6pm.   Loads of local reports of trees down, roads closed, folk stranded at bus / train stations.  Quite scary.    98mph was reported just a bit further north of me.   It’s still roaring outside right now but hopefully we have seen the worst.   Will have to wait until the morning to see the full extent of damage.   Hope everyone stays safe.  It’s not much fun out there.

and back to Storm Arwen folks

Still very quiet here in SE London,  in fact it seems quite placid. not that cold outside (4.1c) and hardly a breeze. just shows how our tiny island can have such a difference in weather and renews my belief that its always a 'look out the window' scenario in the conditions forecast
