With a temperature in the shade of 40 degrees, how hot would it be in direct sunshine out and about today? I put my thermometer in the garden but the LCD display melted lol.

The top temperature for South Ockendon is 38C and I hope it does not get any higher.

Definitely hair dryer conditions out and about this morning. Some people were clearly struggling in the heat. At Kingston Hospital, one nurse was very unhappy that elderly outpatients are being cooled with fans which spread infection.

Left 40c on the car thermometer in Surbiton. Arriving in Ringwood it's 25c with orangey-grey skies, damp roads and big convective drops falling. The queue out of Bournemouth is incredibly long, I imagine many left the beaches as the cold front came through.

Will talk about the Convective chances for this region in a bit but first, so apparently a fire at the local tire place caused a power outage here and its ridiculously hot in the house.

The outdoor temperature is 38C and the indoor temperature is 29.2c but it feels a lot cooler.

DARTFORD HEATH update: Fag butt or global warming (or maybe both). You decide. Scary stuff on the A2. Vid: Keith Parsons. https://t.co/ToGRSnSmT6

Or maybe just a piece of glass. Global warming for sure as we would not have these conditions otherwise. This feels like Santa Ana winds in LA.

Unless there is an unexpected update, then we have just fallen short of the unprecedented 40c mark. Monks Wood appears to be maxed between 39.5 and 39.9c, Wittering stalled around 39c too.

Edit - Wittering reached 39.9c just like Cambridge.

A significant advection of energy residing over the channel could mean that CAPE could reach 1,000 j/kg and due to high shear and forcing, a lot more than what's there at the moment. A slightly more NE movement rather than horizontally stretched advection over the central southern region at the moment which suggests better dynamics may be in play to give at least some in our region a Storm but not nailed on at all.

Soundings wise and dynamics look better than they were yesterday, suggesting that shearing mixed with CAPE should rather than could, create Storms with enough force to break through the capping and so I'll definitely be looking out later on.

When I ventured out yesterday, not a single bead of sweat did I have. Today, in total contrast, turned into Yoda, I have!💦😁

So it peaked at 37.2c in Barnet, that’s still the highest temp I’ve ever experienced in the UK and sadly it won’t be the last…

Very breezy outside, I really hope there are some atmospheric pyrotechnics headed our way!

Got away 'with it' nearer the coast here...max of 32c yesterday and today just over 33c, feel sorry for those folks further inland, how are those T-Storms looking? or is that wishful thinking.

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics
