Yes May 1989 was a very pivotal moment,we had just endured 4 and a half years without any meaningful dry or warm spells and the change in this month led not only to a great dry ,sunny and hot summer but no other poor summers for almost a Decade until

Summers 89, 90 and 91 exception June, 94 although wet at times, 95, 96 though cool sometimes and 97 with very wet June and August but also heat in August were certainly in the warm camp. Summers 92 and 93 were much mixed especially 93 which was very cool, June 92 was very good but the July and August not so.

Cant get prolonged cold weather anymore in UK,but other countries,continents...

it is strange isn't it...here we have broken a few monthly and seasonal cold records in the last decade..of the top of my head i cant think of any prolonged warm records that have been broken in the same time period??

Have you forgotten 1993?

Not sure what it was like in the South but here in the Pennines 1993 was average albeit cool, the only poor Summer in the 1990s was that of 1998.

My quote was that after May 1989 we had no poor Summers, here at least until 1998,i wasnt talking about individual months but Summere as a whole.1993 here was on the cool side but certainly was not poor,it was average to me,all the other Summers of the 90s were at least better than average.

I was staying in the Highlands, at the time, and 1993 was horrible: I couldn't grow a thing, and there was snow on the hills in early August.

i had a new girlfriend in 1993 (who later became my wife) also had a couple of stag weekends that summer.. so for obvious reason wasn't paying attention to the actual weather therefore 1993 in my memory was very good

All personal perspective I guess. Depends on what you class as a poor summer. I'd rate 2012 as poorest summer since 1988. Likes of 92, 93, 98, 00, 02, 07, 08, 11 were average to quite poor in my view.

I was talking about Summers after May 1989 up to the end of the 90s!

Turning cold across Yorkshire now with snow being reported in a few locations.

Not expecting much though nice to see it falling.

Some sharp frost's expected over next couple of nights which gardens need to be beware of.

Nope they just haven't woken up... Besides, so many false alarms it's no wonder they're not waiting for it to arrive

Thankfully I never even bothered getting into it. Really proud of how well I held myself back on this! Not disappointed as knew it wouldn't happen. Back to looking for sunny sun sun!

Nothing really happening as of yet over here in my neck of the woods. Just a boring cool overcast day.

Just driven over through Last of Summer Wine country Holmfirth, heavy snow on the tops, real treat in Spring! Really makes a difference after this Winter, proper weather at last!

The cold is surely taking its time to arrive its still 11c. Maybe it will stay north of London where it belongs.

As expected, an absolutely foul day today. Truly horrible. I hope those that wished the glorious sunshine away are happy now...
