Unlike many a start to the winter, which is often very wet and stormy, the weather is behaving very kindly this year, and what a blessing to the economy during these hard times, especially after the last 2 years and the restrictions etc. Outdoor activities businesses associated with christmas will be very happy with the weather lately - any festivals, markets etc - perfect conditions, not issues with transport disruption caused by weather (so far). The outlook looks fairly benign, yes snow and ice will be a hazard, but nothing signficant expected - we shall see..

Met office now have a cold action level 3 warning out, they issued a level 1 yesterday! That escalated quickly!

Does Scotland have a separate reporting system for this?

Yes why just England mentioned. Scotland and Wales and N Ireland must have different systems - I though the Met Office covered whole UK, puzzled. Alert should be 4 for Scotland I think, 3 for N Ireland and Wales.

It's in conjunction with Public Health England.

Next weekend is going to test the resilience of the uk power supply as severe cold combines with light winds in the North Sea.

At 20:45 Saturday night it will be World Cup England v France half time, millions will put the kettle on and with temperatures outside well below freezing the demand in the grid will be exceptional.

I presume those in charge are planning for this?

I have brought a load of candles in case

Yep it's going to put a real strain on power. Imagine if we have large power outages with freezing temperatures outside. There will be complete uproar.

Maybe the national grid should start a campaign to 'have a glass of milk instead'?

24 hours from my last post.... still no idea what the weather is going to do lol

Cold to v cold, depending on location; the nights look very very cold. Snow in places, showers of rain, sleet or snow. Dry in other places.

A Wintry mix. There u go.👍

Sometimes in these scenarios its as simple as this;

If a model doesn't predict as much snowfall over the interior then going forward it cannot plot the low temps that would occur, therefore its forecast of the depth of our cold pool is incorrect and allows the milder air in too quickly.

Very simple but also very feasible .

In my experience, it is often works the opposite here. The initial predicted snow threat is just on the wrong side of marginal so we get rain or if it is cold enough just misses. This means that the minma are higher than other areas and so the next predicted snow threat to hit the target ends up being rain as well. This can repeat, to lead to places within 50 miles having  almost a foot of lying snow and nothing here.

Probably better than watching it rain because it's 1°C too warm while most of the country is enjoying snow. Been there many times 😢

Looks likely for most of the UK, this week at least. Next week…? 🤷‍♂️
