Strange looking at the lightning strike history around that area yesterday, that theres no recorded lightning strikes showing on lightningmaps.org....or does that site miss stuff occasionally??

There is a bit on page 11. This is about the new LEELA (The Met Office’s next generation Lightning Location system.) which replaces ATDnet sferic location

"The distance between the ground estimations and the LEELA position is of the order of 1-2 km"

There were a lot of 'missed' strikes yesterday. None of the ones we had showed up at all.

Sad news - hopefully he can make a fully recovery.

In my sons football league theres strict rules about playing when thunder is audible. However very difficult to make a call if there’s been no thunder for a while, or it’s the first strike for a new/developing cell or it’s weak storm with intermittent strikes that’s moved in from another area.

NEWS.SKY.COM

A man was also taken to hospital following the lightning strike during the tournament at The Sele School in Hertford on Monday afternoon.

Gunshot thunder in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Nah, that's not gunshot thunder 😉

This is gunshot thunder (excuse my son's language) - make sure you turn the volume right up!

Plus yesterday the low level misty cloud completely hid what was going on above. Had exactly the same a few years ago in October when outdoors in a fairly cool misty quiet day and suddenly a bolt came out of nowhere.

Try one of those that bangs more than once, that gun shot thunder. March a few years back it was bbbaaannnggg bbaanngg bang, rumble last about a minute bangs were so loud the rumble wouldn't stop after.

Had one rumble last evening about 6.30pm when it got incredibly dark early from a passing cell blocking out the light. It absolutely poured down for about 10 minutes. My mother said she saw a flash at about the same time as the rumble. ⚡

Lightning maps just gets it's data from Blitzortung.

Blitzortung is made up of hundreds of detectors from amateur weather station owners. Anyone can buy a detector and get themselves on the Blitzortung network.

More info on the lightning incident at a Hertford school yesterday from BBC..

A boy, 12, and a man are hit by lightning at a school football tournament in Hertfordshire.

Thoughts with the families affected...hope those injured fully recover ...interesting the way the event occurred as explained by one of the parents ...

Kind of what happened on the 9th May where might get next to no lightning for a good 10 mins when it looks like storms are missing an area apart from the odd flash far away, then all of a sudden a bolt drops down just in front. Such storms which were multi cluster cells that day I think, they can behave so erratic, which is a dangerous factor in itself.

Extremely powerful strike that, not sure if that's in France or here, but if it was checked on the Meteologix lightning detection, may have been classed as a positive strike, angry roarer or wild house shaker, above 50-100 kA!

It's amazing how such a innocuous looking cloud can produce a pretty decent looking funnel, lovely capture!

I thought that too as I live about 15 miles away, and we saw nothing.  There are plenty of eye witness accounts though
